Im saying goodbye to smogging my FD in Nevada and you can too.
 

Only two counties in Nevada have smog laws, Washoe and Clark, and this info is for them. I recently registered my 1993 FD as a classic hot rod and I now longer have to deal with smog.

Here are the rules:
1) your car needs to be at least 20 years old to register for classic hot rod and 25 years old for classic vehicle. The difference in hot rod and vehicle is the hot rod is modified and the vehicle is stock. I asked what counted as modified and the DMV said headers and intake and stuff.

2) Have all your normal registration stuff like your insurance card and also take your old plates and current registration.


3) fill out the necessary forms for your particular type of classic

4) review the forms they have the rules and limits and what you need. Main limit is 5000 miles per year max.

5) pay your fees, i think my FD cost $96

So, if you need to drive 20k miles per year, just get 4 FDs and split the mileage. Their CHEAP right now :)

The guy at the smog shop told me that the legislature often changes the laws and exceptions. The legislature meets this year starting in February so he recommended I do it before then.

The law used to be that in order to register as a classic vehicle you had to pass smog at a normal station and then pass smog at the DMV before you can be smog except.

Under current laws you just can't have a failed smog within the last 90 days and you can register as a classic without any smog testing. So if you qualify and can stay under the 5000 mile limit, get it done asap.

Also my FD isn't my daily driver so 5,000 miles wont be a problem at all I think I put 2500 on it last year. Also they dont actual check or inspect your mileage, it is kind of an honor system thing. When you renew you just fill out a paper saying what your mileage is.

I don't know about Cali law sorry, call your DMV and ask. Don't feel to bad here in Nevada if you car is older than 1968 you don't have to smog and you dont have a mileage restriction. In Cali I believe the year is 1974 and older so you win there.

Cali sucks; the car has to be at least 25 years old and can only be driven to events where the car is being showcased.

So to bump this; Reno_NVFD, I'm moving to Vegas in couple months and plan on following through with this for my 93 FD. Maybe you'll know but being a new applicant will I need to pass smog initially to apply for the classic rod? I'm looking through all of the DMVNV website and doesn't clearly state that I need to do so. Thanks in advance.

You used to have to initally pass smog but they changed the law and you no longer have to pass smog first. The DMV keeps smog records for 90 days after 90 days the DMV has no record of if you passed or failed. As long as you have not smogged in Nevada you should be able to register without any problems as a classic hot rod, no smog needed.

This is too badass; feels like they had us in mind for this :P

Ya I was so excited to not have to smog anymore. I was jumping up and down as I walked out if the DMV, people looked at me pretty weird. Then again most people are really depressed in or near the DMV.

not sure with it being an out of state car and you'll have to go thorugh the vin inspection process for sure ...... do not I repeat DO NOT go to the DMV on Sahara ... the DMV smog lab is there and they have been known to wonder out and catch guys without proper smog equipment and flag their VIN's in the system

Oh yeah makes life easier there is a classic vehicle one on my SA

The VIN inspection can be done at the DMV or you can set something up with the local police department and an officer can come by and inspect your VIN. You will need a VIN inspection since your out of state.

yes he will need the vin inspection ... but I wouldn't count on Metro being much help ... if your vehicle is stolen you have to go to them ... if your house were robbed you'd have to go to them ... any of the DMV's can do I just strongly suggest avoiding the one on Sahara is all

Update with some more info for people out of state. My FD was registered in CA, on non-op. I had to get a vin inspection as Reno_NVFD said and fill out some paperwork but no smog. ended up costing me $350 maybe because it was non-op or out of state who knows but as long as i dont have to smog any more screw it.

or if you happen to live outside of any of the smog areas in california or nevada there is no smog testing whatsoever(over 95% of nevada is a non smog zone, but almost no one lives outside those counties. almost half of california is non smog, except the counties with no smog are also boonie towns. trend? yes.).

I'm interested in what they charged you for, could you post up what they made you pay for?

Interestingly enough I have heard of people doing this. However they usually get caught when the DMV drive by your address and doesn't see your car there. Yes the DMV actually will come find your car. Then there are huge fines and penalties etc etc.
