HELP!! failed smog...

Unhappy HELP!! failed smog...

help, i just failed my smog check
it was really strange
i failed the 15mph test but passed the 25mph test...
I failed the HC part

my results are below
15mph | 1834 rpm | 14.8 %CO2 | 0 %O | 212 Measured :: 118 MAX HC (PPM) | 0.45 Meas 0.75 Max CO (%) | 64 Meas 799 Max NO (PPM) (tested A/F Ratio 14.1)

25mph | 2042 rpm | 14.2 %CO2 | 1 %O | 45 Measured :: 93 MAX HC (PPM) | 0.07 Meas 0.63 :: Max CO (%) | 276 Meas :: 738 Max NO (PPM) (tested A/F 15.0)

what should I do?

forgot to say, everything with emissions in, and a NEW CAT, electric airpump connected to the cat also...

did you make sure the car was toasty before the test? also, some new plugs and a oil change will help...

guess not, i had to change the smog place before i tested, so i didn't get a chance to high-rev it....

and they couldn't take my timing... i wonder if it was due to the Crane CDI

man, something is fishy my last year's record was this

15mph | 803 rpm | 10.2 %CO2 | 6.4 %O | 20 Measured :: 120 MAX HC (PPM) | 0 Meas :: 1 Max CO (%) | no NO tested

25mph | 2590 rpm | 9.5 %CO2 | 7.3 %O | 15 Measured :: 140 MAX HC (PPM) | 0 Meas :: 1 Max CO (%) | no NO tested


it shouldn't be that much off

from 2002

15mph | 2049 rpm | 14.5 %CO2 | 0.4 %O | 25 Measured :: 118 MAX HC (PPM) | 0.18 Meas 0.75 Max CO (%) | 129 Meas :: 1052 Max NO (PPM)

25mph | 1929 rpm | 14.5 %CO2 | 0.4 %O | 25 Measured :: 93 MAX HC (PPM) | 0.17 Meas :: 0.63 Max CO (%) | 113 Meas :: 912 Max NO (PPM)

maybe im a dumbass but does it have something to do with the fact the passing test RPM @15 MPH was 2050 and the failed test is @800? It is also drasticly differant @25 MPH.That tells me that the tester was in the wrong gear @ 15 MPH and possible 25, but you passed that one. hope this helps ya. BTW notice how the higher the revs the lower the emmisons? keep in in 1st for the 15MPH and 2nd for 25. you should pass then, if you go by your numbers allready tested for those RPM's

he is so close why "hook it up" now... I bet it will pass legit if done right. Take in the old Passing test and tell the smog tech what up with the RPM's being off, Tell the SOB to match the damn passing test RPM. Shouldn't be too hard unless you changed Rear end gear.

but u know what, he couldn't get the idle right on his "counter" checker thing, on his timing light also, it showed like 3000+ or 6000+ rpm.... that was weird.... but yeah, my idle is alittle high, i wonder if it is the fast idle cam,

still though, how can my HCs be SO High in comparison to my old tests?

Wire your air pump to run the entire time. It should help at 25mph. As it is, I don't think it will run at that speed (I could be wrong)...

maybe try to search the trick where you and Alcahol to the tank when it is @1/4 tank or so.....Hope that will help

=) one in my home thread in the West, one is gen spec.
different people come to different threads, and well the WEST thread serves as the CA one since emissions in CA are pretty annoying and people in the west knows it best

What kind of new cat did you get? If it was designed for rotary EGTs then there is a chance it is not good anymore.

I have the exact same problem. I passed the 25 mph but failed the 15mph. Failed due to high HC levels. One thing I don't get is how come the max HC level for your testing is 118? I also live in the Bay Area and have been tested at two different smog stations and the max HC limits for my car are 88. In any case here is what I have done to try and get it to pass......New universal cat, plugs,o2 sensor, oil and filter. I even tried running the denatured alcohol. Everything helped a little as my levels dropped down from 209 to 160.
