Hawaii peeps please help! "safety check issues"
I was wondering if you guys could help a fellow fd owner out. I'm having troubles finding someone to safety check my car. My car basically has rims/bodykit with wing, so it will not pass (legally?). I havent tried going for recon, however, its a pain in the *** and I know I wont pass that either. I know a few people that used to pass "illegal" cars, but no longer do so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SOL I think. I had FD with being lowered, no front license plate, and tint... and to pass it I had to raise it with donuts, put back my front plate, and leave my windows rolled down and I passed. So you just gotta keep on trying and dont say anything and hopefully the checker wont say anything either or u just gotta find somebody who will pass it usually for higher amount of money hahah

The inspectors know about the rampant breaking of rules for safety check inspectors, and they do spot checks and surveillence on all the safety check stations.
Also, to the original poster...the body kit doesn't automatically make the car illegal or not pass safety check.
What size are the rims?
If they are 17's, they are not a problem.
If they are 18's or bigger, that's automatic "recon".
If your car is blatantly breaking recon rules, no one will issue a safety check, cause if you get pulled over and the officer knows you've broken recon, he will trace your safety check back to the station and get them in trouble.
Bottom line, get recon and get your car legal.
If you're not on ForumsHawaii yet, check out it out.
There is one auto section that has pretty good threads on recon and what is legal and what isn't.

You can get away with it and just tell the officer "oh, I didn't know", and they will usually let you go with a warning.
I know a guy who did this for over two years.

I was looking on the hawaii forum site that was linked above, and it turns out my lack of a front license plate and clear sidemarkers would make me a quick target for "recon". We don't have anything like Recon in our area. Both the plates and clear lenses are illegal, but we just get tickets for it.
The thing here is... its rarely ever enforced. How strict are they in HI?

Do you own an FC or an FD?
The FC is more low-key than the FD, unless your FC is painted yellow / orange / bright green!
If it's an FD, do you have big rims on it?
If you're attracting attention, the cops will look at you.
The no-front-plate is a good excuse for the cops to pull you over to give you even more tickets.
If you have some time, read some of the posts in the Automotive section, you'll read stories about how nasty some of the cops can get with traffic tickets...
If you keep away from most of the "cruise" areas, you may never get pulled over.
Most of the FC guys I know don't run front plates, and they almost never get pulled over for it - but they avoid all the high-traffic, cruise streets like Waikiki and Ala Moana beach park.
If you get pulled over for something else other than your no-front-plate, the cop can be a ***** and tack on another ticket.
The side markers I don't think they care.
If you owned a Honda, you'd get tickets for it, but since it's not a Honda, the cops don't look for that kinda stuff.
The no-front-plate is pretty blatant, and you're taking a risk though...

Its actually a blue rx-8, which looks very subtle at night. I couldn't get any info on RX8club.com.. so thats why i'm posting here.
Lets see.. I have 19" Daily Driver wheels, but stock is 18" - so i think im good within the 1.5 limit.
I never do cruises, and usually never go to car meets. I actually tend to drive extermely slow on the public roads. The car also looks pretty subtle. On the outside its just MS Kit, and decklid spoiler. It has a high-flow cat, and cat-back exhaust... but unless its WOT, its not very loud.
I still have my front plate mount... so i think i can probably tack that on there if it becomes a problem. I'd rather not though because i don't want to drill into the MS front bumper... and the plate will block a lot of the airflow to the intercooler.
Umm... ok that seems like a pretty involved story in itself. I'll stay away from this one.

Oh, while i'm here... so it looks like the one-spot for Autocrossing in HI has been shut down. That really blows. Hopefully the local SCCA Chapter can find an open parking lot very soon.
One of the more popular places we use here is actually a high school parking lot... works well. The other place is the Texas Motor Speedway Parking Lot. The last place is an old airfiled that is pretty much used for Autocrosses, Time Trials, and Drift Events.

I think you should be okay, but be aware that a cop can give you a ticket for the no-front-plate.

I won't even go into it, cause I'm pissed that the politicians are a bunch of idiots down here and too conservative.
There is even INTERNAL fighting within the various loose racing groups, and that doesn't help - again, check out ForumsHawaii in the Automotive sections for all that bullshit.
