Wondering how many of you/your friends have given up cars/modifications due to the hassle of smog? With all the BS around California, you really cannot enjoy working on cars anymore. This may force me into something else.

Sadly no engine mods, unless u count K&N filter, but my GSL-SE passed smog recently.

But yeah smog laws suck. Especially for a car that's 25 years old. You think they'd give it up to us older car owners. Really, how many older cars are on the road?

 

I could see them making smog exempt areas in cali based on number of new cars vs number of cars 25 and older

 

Increasing horsepower is easy. Increasing horsepower and still be able to pass smog is the real challenge, especially in the Peoples Republic of California.

I would venture to say that my S5 TurboVert was the only RX7 there that could put down 300+hp to the wheel and still pass smog.

 

as long as old car like ours are on the roads and ppl keep modding them there will always be a market for "smog passing" just a matter of being willing to pay for it.

I'm considering the possibility of switching over to a 911GT3...bad *** out of the box and no real need to modify for track duty.

in all honesty, theres virtually 0 reason to modify new cars (2010 and 2011). you can, but why not just enjoy a new car for what it is, a gas saving-under warrenty-no hassle car?
i love modifying my 7, but i also understand that smog is always present. i dont condone illegal smogs at all, but hey, that black market exists for a reason i suppose.

There are smog exempt counties in Cali. Toulumne and Calaveras I think.

 

I know that a few counties are smog exempt but it still sucks and what i was trying to say in my previous post was like in bigger places have say 80% newer cars (late 90's and up) and 20% older cars they could be maybe a little easier on the older cars

 

I really am throwing around of possibly selling me single turbo FD that I just built for a Viper GTS. I love the FD to death, but I really don't want to be worried about driving the car.

 

Yeah. I'm thinking about keeping mine until i finish the body/interior and keep the engine as is. I'm running factory twins with a bunch of M2 goodies and i still have all the smog equipment. I'm sure with proper tuning on my PFC, I can get it to pass smog without a problem. I might just keep it and enjoy it for the sole reason that I absolutely love my FD.

I feel that it would take too much time, effort and too many headaches to make the FD as if not more competitive as say, a GTR or a GT3 or something of the sort. Granted, both of those cars are fairly pricey but they're essentially purpose built to be badasses.

Who knows though...I did spot a Gallardo for under 80k...

 

that thought has crossed my mind many times but haven;t given up yet. I think at the moment gas prices and my mods are making me consider it.

 

I always run a setup where I can switch back to stock and smog when needed. For example I still run all smog equipment, stock twins on my FD and I'm pushing around 300whp @ 12psi and on my old 240 I had a fully built KA-T and to pass smog I just had to switch everything back over, took about 1hr to take off and reinstall...

 

^That's the smart way to do it.

These older model FMIC's are REALLY hard to find since HKS doesn't seem to get CARB approvals on their current products. This is also the one where the only modification you need to do to install is make a small 4 inch hole under where the stock Air Box mounts and you still can retain the smog pump, power steering, and AC. No other cutting necessary, no bumper removal to install, etc.

This is the FMIC set up I have in my S5 TurboVert. I'm also running their T04E Turbo where HKS secured CARB approval. Even harder to find.

 

I just send WackyRicer my VIN and he takes care of the rest. No hassle, no worries.
