CA Can't decide if I should get a 94 Impreza or a 90 Rx7

Can't post this in the other general section, so thought I post here since I'm from the West.

Anyways, I have an opportunity to pick up either a 90 RX7 GTU or a 94 Impreza L.

The rx7 has 190k and $567 in back fees from the dmv (which I don't mind paying, but I'm also worried about smog). I checked the smog history in California and the rx7 has passed it every time it smogged. Clean titled, 5 speed, no damages besides some small dings here and there, current owner said his grandpa is the original owner, the car still starts up and runs, but current owner doesn't know how to drive a stick thus why he's selling it so he can get an auto car. no speakers in the car. other than that, it's 5 lugs and manual windows and locks, has a sunroof.

The impreza L is auto and awd, but needs a new engine. It comes complete with everything including power windows and door and a factory sunroof which is rare upon the L model of the impreza line. clean title, the body looks great for it's age, and they're asking $500 for it. they'll even have it tow to my house since they have AAA insurance though it only works up to 100 miles. I live 120miles from them so hopefully the AAA insurance guy would be kind enough.

I've owned a coupe impreza before and i'm currently driving a beat up impreza sedan to get around town and work. If I was to get the 94 impreza, I would swap in a 5 speed and a 2.5rs engine, and then slowly turn it into a 2.5rs clone.

If I was to get the rx7, I know I'll have to rebuild the motor soon, which would run me about the same price as swapping the impreza engine and tranny, but probably less work since I won't have to do a 5 speed swap.

I want a car that can go faster than my current 1.8L 95 Impreza. That **** is so slow on acceleration, especially going uphills. However I really like the way 93-01 impreza looks when it's tuned up. I used to own a 240 with a welded diff as well and that was a lot better than my impreza. I like the s5 rx7 'cos of the styling and stock 160hp which is a plus, and it's similar to the 240 it seems.

Which of the two do you guys think I should get? I live in Sacramento, so there's really no mountains or off roading to attack.

Get the -7 so nobody will think you're a lesbian.

Or is that only Foresters? I get confused on that one.

from my experience of owning a 2005 Legacy GT and owing the Rx7. The Rx7 will be cheaper to maintain and mod. A sti engine swap + tranny = $5,000-$7000. Engine swap + tranny for rx7 = $2500, I dont know what the prices are for a 94 Impreza. But then again, its a Subaru

The Impreza is a good base to start from, but the 7 is all original. I would go for the 7

Or if you want to go completely off the wall...

Get an Audi 90 Quattro with 5 Cylinder. Having a torsen center diff is SOOOOO much different than having a viscous. It shouldn't be too expensive to own, a lot of the parts are VW. People are giving these car's away. Search on youtube if you want to see the performance potential. Chassis wise they are identical to the Audi S2.

I bought a 93 S4 a couple years ago for $2500. The car was a total money pit but also a riot. The 5 cylinder turbo from that car is easily swapped over. I wouldn't suggest one of those because they are a bit too heavy to be practical.

With AAA make sure that the car is currently registered. Their tow drivers have been instructed not to tow cars that are not registered. You will probably be asked to pay for the extra 20 miles. I'd count on it and have a party if the guy doesn't ask.

I ended up picking up a 1990 gtu rx7, but I can't work on it until this coming up weekend. Car is dead because battery drains too fast. I suspected the alternator, so I ended up pulling another one at pick-n-pull. Same thing happened still
