CA emissions

Hmmmm........I wonder if this will allow us to pass CARB emissions in Cali. I also wonder if this is connects to the downpipe or header. Any ideas?

http://www.1aauto.com/1A/CatalyticCo...CD00047/381221

Its says its CARB certified and EPA certified.

I believe it would still be technically illegal to put that on an 86-88. They had three cats and the law stipulates you must maintain the same number, so you might still fail visual despite good numbers.

Stupid law.

Is it me, or does that setup look longer than the stock three cat setup? The picture must show it from the bottom side since the air pipe is on the passenger side of the engine. To me, it looks like the pipe after the cats would end up about a foot past where the stock Y-pipe connects.

The photo looks like a PhotoShop mock-up, not the real thing...

Are you running an aftermarket exhaust when passing emissions? I have an aftermarket header w/ o2 sensor and full exhaust.

a aftermarket exhaust have nothing to do with smog, with that said i have smog most of my cars with a aftermarket exhaust, you just have to have your cat/ cats, and all the smog stuff under the hood when they check. remember we have 3 cats so if you want a bigger shot at passing keep it like that, you will need that o2 and the smog tech may not even know you have a after market header, some will give you problems like saying wheres the CARB label if they know sum wont.

In Cali, generally every other year you get smogged, and now every other time they require you to go to a Test-Only station.

It may be helpful to build a relationship with a test-repair shop, and they can sometimes recommend a test-only shop when needed.

There are both visual inspections and the dyno test here. While your car may pass smog, it doesn't mean it will pass visual. You can pre-test your car for $25 or so, and this can be a good way to begin building a relationship with a test-station, or to find one you can work with...

Well like Isaid Im running an aftermarket header w/ o2 sensor, a CARB certified cat, and a dynomax catback system. Will this pass? I still have the spider web of hoses along with the airpump still running. Is central Cali less strick being its more dense of an area/population?

You should be ok to pass as long as its running decently. Visually I don't think you should pass because of the headers.. but there are still some smog places that are lenient on the visual/headers area if it has the o2 sensor and everything else is good.

I had on my FC: Bonez downpipe, bonez high-flow cat, and racing beat catback... passed fine. On the FD I have some random downpipe, stock maincat, and some old HKS muffler... That was just fine too..

Most smog stations if your exaust is fairly quiet, and car is running good they won't be as picky on the small visuals... if you have some HUGE shiny single turbo well your hurting.

Edit: I should note that all my emissions equipment are there, without an airpump you more then likely won't be in good shape sniffer wise.. EGR you might get away without but the cat's need the airpump to be happy.

I don't think the HKS is exempt, its just the HKS filter was one of the few CARB legal air filters. As long as you have a CARB sticker to go along with whatever after market items you have then you should be in good shape.

my old autoteacher is a smog tech. he says you must have your airpump tube going to the STOCK filter box. he says no matter if its CARB or not. you also must have all your cats. all 3 for s4, all 2 for s5.

and he knows rotaries pretty well.
