Question Am I gonna have to sell my FD when I move to CA?

Hi. I'm probably moving to the San Diego area sometime in mid 2006. Looking through the CA's DMV site, it looks like I have to register the car and have it smogged in 20 days.

Some of my more obvious mods are a FMIC, Koyo rad, Greddy elbow, no air pump, metal cat, down pipe and a street port. I'm not sure if I'd pass smog even with an air pump and a stock cat. I certainly wouldn't pass a visual inspection with the FMIC.

Looking to see what you guys opinions/experiences are regarding this so I can figure out what to do. Thanks.

Alberto,

You will pass visual with all that stuff, but you will need to reinstall the air pump and connect it up to the cat to pass the sniffer test. You should pass fine, assuming the car's running good. If you have a PFC, you will have to swap in a stock ecu or rig the CEL to come on at start-up.

PM if you want more details....I passed a couple of months ago at a Test Only center with downpipe, hi-flow cat, PFS SMIC, Rx7fashion intake, PFC, bigger injectors, streetport, etc.

intercoolers are totally legal--it even says so in the inspection manual. anyone that fails you for that is a total idiot and it's a wonder they ever passed the smog licensing test.

Thanks fellas.

Car is running reasonably well. A bit rich on the tuning side, but that is easy enough to work out. I still have the airpump in the garage so I probably just need to locate someone that has the piping from the airpump to the cat and then weld an inlet into the midpipe just b4 the cat. Maybe I'll re-install in the off season and try to pass NY inspection to see how I might fare.

The way everyone talks about "failing the visual" made it sound like the car had to be closer to stock than mine is.

Now to research the job market...

Hey, I thought they only did that in NY!

I tend to go straight to option B...

My buddy started a band called Plan B a few years back, pretty cool.

You can put an LS1 in it... Mine was refed last month and is now 100% legal on the streets of CA.

You will not pass with a street port. No matter who says other wise. Once you move to cali look me up I'll see what I can do for you.

Bullshit. I just passed two months ago, even with a hi-flow cat and downpipe. Just because YOU couldn't pass doesn't mean you should spread falsehoods around....

I'll be happy to dig up my results and post them if anyone doubts this.....feel free to drop by my house and listen to the idle and tell me if the engine is streetported or not..

When you get to SD shoot me a PM. We'll have to hit some tracks together... although San Diego has no tracks... at least not within 200 miles... sigh...

If you can get your car to pass at the tailpipe and install all the necessary smog equipement you should be able to get smogged eventually... I know a few good places... they don't cheat but they're generous on the visual
