AL New to RX7's here...

Hello all,

My name is Vincent and I am new to this forum....but not to forums in general. I have recently aquired another project car. It is a 1986 Mazda RX-7 GXL. I am looking to do a V-8 swap in it with some goodies.

The car is white with a blue interior, and it actually in pretty good shape to have 236,xxx miles on it. The motor in the car supposedly runs but I won't know until I get a fuel pump in the gas tank and mounted back on the car. I have alot of questions, but I'm usually good at doing alot of reading and research on forums so I'm sure I'll be able to find all of the answers.

This looks like a great site and I hope am I able to make some new friends on here, as get into more depth with this car. Does anyone have a five lug conversion setup and who is close to Alabama? How do I go about aquireing this?

Any ideas, suggestions, or hints would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Vincent Coker

Welcome! You're off to a good start. And 236k miles HOLY CRAP! That'll be interesting... You ought to search for things like maintenance, bringing your RX-7 out of storage (as I assume this car's been sitting more than a few weeks), and check out:
http://www.rotorwiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

Also, there's a classified section on this forum, people use it a lot and that's where all WTB/WTT/FS threads are supposed to be. There very well may be a five lug swap available at this moment. Just go search, send some messages, and start a WTB thread.

Oh yeah, PICS OF YOUR GXL!

Try the "other engines" section of the forums for the v8. You'll only get frowns here (from me too). The 5 lug conversion is common and you can find out how from a forum search. You basically find an RX-7 with 5 lugs and pull the right parts. You can find most questions that way or through the forum FAQ. Besides that get a Haynes manual and do everything in chapter 1; right away and again per the schedule. Also do a forum search on: fuel pulsation dampener, DTSS, OEM thermostat, logicon, grounds.

Talking

I have some pics on the car still on the trailer. I have already ordered a used fuel pump and sending unit and I plan on having the fuel tank vatted and cleaned and put back in the car by next week some time. I'm gonna see if I can get the engine running and the car somewhat driveable so that way I'll know if its work anything to sell.

I have noticed that the car looks like it was regularly maintained at a place called Rotary Performance in Texas. Has anyone ever heard of them?

When I get the engine running I plan on selling both the engine and transmission. Don't know exactly how much they are worth but if the engine is in running condition, I plan looking at what running engines go for on here and ebay and pricing accordingly.

Wish me luck everyone!

Here are some pics for you guys...

Enjoy!

I call dibs on the seat belts and the cruise control.

Oh wait, you're not parting it out.

(J/K)

(...you don't have rear seats, do you?)

No, it's not a 2+2....so no rear seats. I may be parting out the cruise control if somebody wants it. Hell I plan on parting out all kinds of stuff out of this thing. I'm basically only using it for a drag setup. Where in Alabama are you from Valkryie?

Vincent

Auburn at the moment. Otherwise, Fairhope.

I don't think an S4 cruise control will actually work for my S5, though (the connectors are different).

But if you plan on installing harnesses and stripping the interior for drag racing, I would snap up the seat belts and the pillar trim in an instant.

It looks to be in pretty good shape. I bet with a clean up and a rebuild it would be like new.

Why not get a turbo 13B bridgy? I hate people who cross breed cars

Because I don't know anything about rotaries, except that they are unreliable when pushed hard. I had a friend who had a full bridge ported motor on a turbonetics T-88 and was making 546 whp on 32 psi, but he went through several engines, trannies, and rear ends.

I know that I'm probably in the wrong place and alot of you guys think I'm just another dumbass redneck who's trying to "put the pooooweer in da mazada". But I assure you that I plan on doing the swap as tastefully as possible, without altering any other functions of the car.

Lets not forget we're all here because we love our cars, and even though I've never driven a seven, I am already in love with my car. I mean, whats not to like?

1. A really nice and simply laid out interior.
2. A super lightweight car.
3. Good suspension geometry in stock form.
4. Lots of aftermarket goodness.
5. DID I MENTION IT WAS LIGHTWEIGHT?

Anyways, hope this lets everyone know that I'm not so bad...

Later,
Vincent
