I guess Nissan people like the front end swap better than Mazda people.

and money!

at the time when i started my swap, they wanted close to $3,500-$4,000 for just the mounting kit and it had about a 2-3 months back order on it.

my mounting kit was $1,405shipped, didn't have any problems putting it on. and now i see that the mounting kit that hinson makes is trying to compete with their (grant's) prices (DRASTIC drop to about $1,600).

if that were the price, "back then," then i would have gone with the hinson kit despite the wait.

but i "proved everyone wrong" saying that the granny's kit would never fit, they had fitment issues, blah blah blah. my kit went on without a fight, sure the engine sits higher but i'm still going to modify my hood either way.

Sweat Bro ....

Soon to be fired up, don't forget to post up the video of its first start-up. Helped a bud do a LS1/FD quick swap (Spaceman Spiff) over the weekend just north of Prunedale. Lots of us in this area, someday we should all get together.

Keep up the progress and we all pray for dry weather!!

This thread looks REALLY familiar. Have fun with the swap, it's not as crazy as some people think, just be patient with the wiring and double check your bolts.

How many possible adapter plates could there be if you bought the only LS1 kit Grant sells for the FD?

You see, Grant originally built the cradle you have in your car to mount an LT1, and it didn't even do that properly. People had to put washers between the cradle and frame rails to get enough clearance between the throttle body and the hood, and Grant's solution to clearance for the steering rack was denting the front of the oil pan. You also had to eliminate the required backing plates for the motor mounts because Grant build the cradle that way... for no specified reason that I've ever heard. Bill Hagen went through 5 sets of motor mounts because of it. Therefore, the cradle isn't even to "spec" for mounting an LT1/SBC.

His "LS1" kit is nothing more than the same LT1 cradle he developed on my car, with LS1/SBC adapter plates he makes. While there are other adapter plates that will allow using SBC-style mounts on an LS1 engine, they don't fit right with the Energy Suspension motor mounts that were used for designing his LT1 cradle. Even with the backing plates removed, they're still too thick and don't have a notch for the bump in the back of the mounts. I'd be interested to know how he solved that problem when the width between his cradle's mounts is even narrower.

So... how did you get your engine to mount to the cradle, and what turned out to be the "right" adapter plates?

Eh its kinda-sorta in, the grannys "no modification required" kit had me grinding my subframe, bend my ps lines, modify the mounting kit & bend it in order to get in place, then modify the adapter plates & mounts to bolt up to my ls1, and thats not all! It seems the cradle needs to be bent outwards in order for it to align with its own mounts so I have to do that on Sunday as well as my rewire. The way hinson did their mounts is so easy, they should have just made a mounting kit like that.

no cutting, hacking, washers, risers, etc. needed here.

That's because your engine is sticking out of your engine bay with no chance of a stock hood fitting over it. Is that a design feature?

*knock knock* "who's there?" "it's mr. a couple of pages back!"

lol it doesn't matter if it clears or not, my AFTERMARKET HOOD will NOT even clear the hinson kit, i know this for a fact if it "clears" the rotary and still rubs.

see why not?

OMFG, that's terrible!

If you were going to have to modify or buy a new hood anyway, why not go with the solution that results in a lower center of gravity? I guess you figured mounting the engine even higher so that you absolutely had to use a hood scoop was the best solution...

it was all about the money when i started my swap. i am 18, with no financial help from anyone with this swap, with a "whatever" job compared to many. yeah man, i have money to burn.

-1,405 shipped when hinson's wanted WAY more at the time.

we're not all full of money like you've presented yourself to be.

You do realize that you could have just bought the engine cradle and waited to buy the rest of the conversion parts later, right?

As little respect as I have for Hinson and his business practices, I have far less respect for Grant and his business practices. People like you are basically rewarding him for screwing me over, so you'll have to pardon me if I'm not as excited about your conversion as you are.

Good luck, and I hope everything works out for you.

i had a budget i was working with, i had thought about that too. but after i bought all those things, my budget was down to about 100 dollars, i can't buy anything; pretty much. when i had all the parts under the budget that i set for myself (had no choice), i would be paying bills after. bills = no money.

i am not rewarding him in any way, shape or form. i simply said my granny's kit fit. that is all.

Good luck, and I hope everything works out for you.
thanks, good luck to you as well with your project(s).
