May 6th, you'll have your answers

Finally I have a guy with a FD going to the track day I host at Grattan Raceway.

From what I know he has pretty decent experience. I'll let him take his car out for a few laps and them give him my LS1 R1 for a few laps.

Time is ticking....no more BS, I'll video the whole thing and post times in both his car and mine.

Similar things have already been done before, the LS1 has come out as equal or on top.

Isn't Howard Coleman in Wisconsin or Minnesota or somewhere else nearby? Why not invite him to a track day comparo?

True, but you'd never know it based on some of the posts in here. I don't need any evidence to encourage me, but I think it'd be cool to see the videos.

If Howard would come I would be glad to have him here.

If he is in Wisconsin and doesn't mind the ferry ride its really not that far.

Yup, Turbojeff and I did a back to back morning/evening session. First in his car, then in mine. We were both faster in mine. me by a whole bunch, him by just a little.

I've also let Artguy, DamonB, and a few others drive my car. Their comments all fall on deaf ears though. Some people just don't (won't) hear it.

I was faster in wingsfan's FD by .1 sec or so. Of course that was a morning session (my car) to afternoon (his car), the pavement gets warmer and the course is cleaner later in the day so it is faster later on.

The real story lies behind the numbers. Wingsfan LS1 FD was not setup for auto-xing, my R1 is. I'm running way more negative camber than his car and I have the tire pressures set for it's mods, etc. With a little tuning, alignment settings, tire pressures and possible sway bar adjustments the LS1 FD would dominate any rotary FD, no doubt in my mind.

If you just want to kick the crap out of everyone locally the LS1 in a FD would be one good way to do it. It is lighter than a Vette and has a great chassis.

Just a quick question, how often do you have to change the plugs in an LS1 FD and how hard is it do? doesnt look like a whole lot of room to get your hands down there to change em.

I pull mine with every oil change and recheck the gaps, and replace them as needed (haven't had to yet). Taking a look at the plug gives me an idea of what's going on with my tune.

It's a piece of cake to get to them (from the top even), takes about 5 minutes to pull a side.

The NGK plugs are $12 for a set of 8, that's alot better then $40 for 4! I change them from the top and it may take 15-20 minutes. It's not any harder then changing rotary plugs. I do remove the ABS heat shield to get to the rear plug, but that just takes a second. I change them every couple of months.

wow thats awesome. I love the rotary, but i keep going back to hinson's site and looking at the threads on here. 350-400 rwhp seems pretty easy to get out of one of these LS1's and i don't see any cons about it. I never liked camaro's or firebirds, but i never doubted the motor. i really think i might end up doing one of these swaps. i could sell all my performance rotary stuff and have money left over after i buy everything i need for the LS1 install. Plus the weight from everything i have read is very minimal if any, (i already don't have AC or PS nor would i install them with the new motor) and a 20b to make more power is a lot more expensive and heavier. on top of that, it would be just a cool swap, with that much torque it must be like having 2 small turbo's always boosting!

here's another question. how does the shifter feel with a short shift kit? i have the C's in my my 7 now and it is soooo short, i love it. but i sat in a buddies new GTO and it feels sooo sloppy and long. his car just had the stock shifter, but i was wondering how the tranny feels with a short shift kit.

anyway, thanks for the replies,
harrison

I'm running a billet Pro 5.0 shifter and a Steeda Tri-ax arm. It feels great. The throws are short, and the shifter is very clear as far as what gear you're in. Each gear clicks into place nicely. In comparisson, the stock FD shifter is far more vague, and my STi shifter is somewhere in between. To be perfectly honest, I prefer the feel/feedback of the Pro 5.0 in my 7

Yeah, I remember back when I was into Mustangs, Pro 5.0 was the shifter to have.
