What do people that convert to the LSx do with emmisions? I dont want to convert to LSx find out that I cant re-register because of emmisions testings. Thoughts,

 

Most of them just leave the emissions out? That's what I'd do, lol.

 

What if the city requests it? I would like to know if I do the convert than she can pass even though its not a rotary now. I would keep all LSx items that are related to emmisions.

 

It would really depend on where you live and how they approach emission testing.

I'm about to find out how it works here in Colorado...so far I've gotten conflicting info, so I don't know for sure.
Apparently we'll have to have the conversion inspected- where they perform a visual inspection for the emissions that pertain to the engine, then it goes to the regular inspection station for a tailpipe test, just like any other car.
I have no idea how thorough the visual inspection is nor whether we have to meet the standards for the car's chassis year or the engine year.

Should be interesting.

 

I passed AZ state sniffer emissions with a pair of Magnaflow cats. They say they have a visual here, but since the charcoal canister is in the rear of the car they don't really do anything during the visual. They just run the car on the rollers.

FWIW, it was a lot closer to failing with the cats than I thought it would be...and my engine is pretty stock. I actually failed with the LS1 with some cheap eBay cats.

 

The people that worry about emissions just keep the equipment. A few of the CA guys run all the stock equipment and pass the state referee inspection.

 

Really depends on what state/county you live in. Guys in the Bay Area of California had to swap all the emmisions specific parts from the donor car to the RX. Including buy not limited to:
Charcoal Canister + related valves
Fuel level gauge (part of the evap. sensor system)
Airpump
purge valve + wiring
Pre-cats + main cat
Intake box
Plus there is more. It can become very involved - and the LSX swap is not a bolt in deal to begin with - the easiest part is droping in the the engine and transmission.

 

Its funny how a state employee's can give you conflicting info on this subject. I guess thats why I asked here. I figured that if guys in Cali, or even NY can do it that I sould be good to go with Washington state. I just need to bear in mind that it might cost a few more $$ for all the smog junk.

Any thoughts on what you would do different or pitfalls that you didnt see when you did your LSx swap. Like finding the right donor car (what to look for, did you just buy the motor and trans, buy the whole car and part out the rest to recoupe some cash) Anything would help.

 

It really depends on your county/state regs. Here in TX, the engine has to be the same year as the car or newer, easy part with lsx motors, and have cats. But we also have counties where there is no emissions testing. Thats where we all "live" to get our 9 sec "street" cars legal

 

California is the hardest I know. Everything has to be oem. The cats have to be in the oem positions which are a TIGHT fit in the tranny tunnel.

If you're worried about emissions and want to be 100% sure of yourself get a wrecked Camero or something. Use what you want, part it out and have the remainder towed away.
