Unhappy Holy Crap!!!

You could fit a small Indonesian Family in that tube!!

As for the swap, mixed feelings - you sure did make it more dependable and damed if you didn't get rid of all those vacume lines!!!!

I have never had a car that was more of a pain in the *** then my FD w/rotary engine. But I bought it because of the rotary engine (originally had a 9sec SuperCharged Mustang) to have something different.

All that is me, go do what you want to do. Man that conversion looks expensive, both in time and money. For all that work you could have put a nasty ported 3-Rotor or mondo turbo charged rotary in it.

From the looks of it, seems pretty good but how do you change your spark-plugs??

Page 3 was certainly entertaining. Jim, I really enjoy your posts - especially when someone annoys you.

IF the Renesis lives up to it's hype (efficiency, reliability, yada, yada), it will interesting to see how many conversions from what we have now to that occur.

Notice I did not try to compare the power output of the Renesis to a V-8, I believe that point has been hammered home.

I would like to echo LUV94RX7, V-8 guys: quit wasting your time trying to convince the rabid naysayers and spend it getting your cars up and running - I want to see videos dammit.

I'd recommend 5.85" connecting rods instead of 6", and pistons with a larger dish, but if you haven't bought your heads already, you'll want a larger combustion chamber. That's the easiest way to lower compression.

You'll need a different cam too, BTW.

Edit:
JE has an off-the-shelf part... #SRP-148988. 4.030" bore, 3.875" stroke, 5.850" rod, -14cc dish. 10.3:1 with a 64cc head, 9.7:1 with a 70cc head, and 9.3:1 with a 76cc head. $516.

I am doing an SR20 in my FD and it is coming along, good luck with your swap, I am of the opinion the more swaps the better, if for no other reason than it pisses all these supposed "purists" off...

Here's the latest update. I just installed the LT1 engine with the T56 tranny about half an hour ago. I didn't have anyone help me do the install so manuvering was a bitch, especially since I'm a small guy. Everything is in now and I'll be taking pics tomorrow of it. I can't believe it's 1:00AM I have so much homework to do, guess I'll pull an all-nighter. BTW, anyone doing this install should take the EGR valve out before installing the engine. I forgot to on mine so I scratched the paint allittle

Congratulations John.

BTW, anyone leaving the EGR on an LT1 should at least move it "off" the engine (remote mount) or get rid of it altogether and use block-off plates on the intake.

Elminating the EGR functionality from the programming of the PCM is fairly easy with LT1 Edit, apparently, and the heat from the EGR is what causes the rear of the LT1 intake to break its seal and eventually leak oil down the rear of the block...

LT4 engines had no EGR.

Congrats! can't wait to hear how it runs. I would *love* to see one of the V8 7's on a road course to finally silence all those that say it's going to kill the handling characteristics.

I'm assuming you opted against that gargantuan turbo?

and as far as sleep. shoot... you'll get plenty of that when you're dead.

Looking at another pic, can't tell dimension, but what about the steering rack, from firewall to the front rack, is something going to have to be fabricated to get the rod around the engine and to the rack?

If I were to use stock LT1 exhaust manifolds, I would have no clearance problems at all with the steering shaft. But I'm going to have to get creative to fit some custom headers in. But to answer your question, no there will not need to be anything fabricated to fit the steering shaft

Funny that all of you guys talk about how "no one's completed a V8 FD" The 2nd FD I'd ever seen up close was a 550hp V8 race car.

It's actually a cool story...my dad locked his keys in his truck and needed to use my AAA, so I called up the service and waited for a guy to show up, once he did I showed gave him my card and went to wait in my car and listen to music. After he was all done my dad told me to come over and talk to the guy. At first I thought he just wanted to know about the FD, but it turned out that he had one too...only with a V8!! "Bastardly!" I thought.

He invited me over to his house which wasn't far to check it out. I wasn't really excited or impressed with the idea of having a clunkety old V8 replacing the rotary but it was an FD so I had to check it out. The car was really ugly for an FD, it had the rear lights taken out and painted black and the interior was fitted with a rollcage and only the nessassities for racing which included a custom fabbed hose to ventilate air from outside to help keep the driver cool. So with the overall condition of the car being what it was and the idea of an old V8 inside I wasn't very impressed (except for the fact that he actually did it, and did it himself). However, once he fired it up it and I heard that 550hp monster rev, it suddenly made a lot more sense...

Don't get me wrong, I myself am still opposed to killing rotary cars like Jim has done (that car is so sweet), and I would never do it myself in 100 years to my car...but this car was a P.O.S. to start with and it had 550hp! cheap! He told me he raced the car on a road circuit (real roads) in Mexico. So I guess the moral of the story is each to his own, and for this guy I definately think having a cheap, reliable 550hp V8 in his FD suited his needs perfectly.

EDIT: By the way, I remember when I invited him to SS5 he said he wanted to sell the car, so if any of you guys are interested let me know and I'll contact him to see if it's still for sale. I think it'd probably serve as a pretty fast track car with that 550hp, and I bet he's probably willing to let it go for pretty cheap, especially compared to what a 550hp rotary FD would cost...

Lightbulb Also...

Everyone keeps talking about "how will the handling be affected?" and "you know it's going to be a sled!" Well FOLKS! HELLO?

This theory has been disspelled. www.hinsonsupercars.com. Researched, tried, tested, and true.

It weighs LESS than stock, it's a 50/50 car, handles like it's on rails, and runs 11.80's (on street tires) OUT OF TUNE- and does that NA with a 99% stock LS1!!!

These cars are a reality. Please, before you spew misinformation, read up on these insane creations that are now a reality!

True this. I think most people will be suprised once I put this car on a scale. I'm tearing out allot more stuff than Brian but by no means is it going to be a track only car. It'll still be 99% street driven.
