Lightbulb a few newbie questions....

-Is it possible to have a daily driven turbo ls1 rx7 with 400-450whp on low boost and anywhere up to 600-650whp at high boost or is that aiming too high for the motor?

The only reason I ask is that my buddie had a daily driven single turbo supra set at 450whp at low boost and it was actually very good on the street.

Yup. Totally possible, but it will depend on the details of your setup. With enough turbo to support 650rwhp the "low boost" setting (whatever the WG spring is) will probably give you more than 400rwhp. Matt Harlan made more than 1200rwhp off his twin turbo LS1, so asking 600 rwhp is nothing with the right parts.

Apples and oranges comparrison. The supra is heavier, and the gearing is different. 450rwhp in an LS1fd is not the same thing as 450rwhp in a Supra.

[/QUOTE]I was expecting low boost to be more like 500-550whp...I dont know why I posted 400. I really dont want NOS.....and comparing the supercharger setup and turbo setup....there just seem to be a lot more possibilities with a turbo. Plus I think I would miss the blow-off sound. I cant wait to get my project started.

I know the ls1 redlines a little higher than the rx7.....do u all have shift lights to remind u when to shift or is it something that u just get use to? Reason that I ask is that I dont have a shift light now...I cant stand those huge shift lights.....and I am so use to just shifting right before 7500rpm its like second nature now. Just wondering if u guys had any problems like that?

And also does the shifter sit any higher than the rx7 with a short shifter in it? Just wondering.

A LS1 redlines at 6k, with a little work you can take that to 7k. I've never needed a shift light on any car.

Yes the stock T56 shifter will sit higher but there's tons of cures for that.

Um...might want to rethink that.

Nope

You won't have any problems. You can hear the gear whine to the point when you know it's appropriate to shift (it's been awhile since I've driven my car, but I think I could get by without my tach). Also, the torque profile doesn't feel anything like a 13brew, and the revs will climb at a different rate, so you shouldn't have any problems with it.

And also does the shifter sit any higher than the rx7 with a short shifter in it? Just wondering.
Easily fixed. You'll have much bigger things to worry about if you're thinking turbo ls1 in an RX7 than whether the shifter's in the same spot.

Do u mean tuning and fitting the turbo and intercooler or is there something else that I need to worry about? Either way I was thinking about getting hinson to do most of the building. They are about 3 hours or so from me.

I mean that you're worried about where the shifter is going to sit, when what you should be worried about is how you're going to fit 10 lbs of **** into a 5 lb bag.

In my opinion people are far too cavalier about "going turbo" with their swaps. Most are dreamers that haven't ever seen an LS1 RX in person, and just don't grasp how little room there is in the engine bay after the swap.

The other thing people tend to underestimate is how much it will cost them. Forced induction is pricey, any way you look at it. You'll need to upgrade just about everything to make/handle the power, and there's a ton of fabrication involved. And fabrication means that you're paying out the ***, either in your own time, through your wallet, or both.

Anyhow, that's not to say that it can't be done, and I'm not out to dash anyone's hopes/burst their bubble. Most people's plans simply aren't realistic, and unfortunately you can't tell them about it because they get very defensive.

I'm just wrapping up the fabrication of all my hotside stuff. There are pictures in this post.

There are assorted other pictures of some progress along the way scattered in various posts over at TC.

There's three that I know of running. hinson, the single car that his shop built, and CDK4219has a procharger setup. 1point3liter and I are both working on single turbo setups, and I've seen photos of an LS1 FC getting outfitted with a procharger. There are also a handful of other guys that I've talked to that are interested, but either haven't made up there minds, or haven't started.

There are a ton that started their swaps with the intention of running boost. Most quit and decide that heads/cam/headers/nitrous would be more than enough to satisfy their needs.

Welcome to the dark side

Hit up 2hotrods on RP. He's an awesome guy and I'm sure he'll let you nose around his car to see the fitment and maybe take you for a spin so you can feel what an LS1 FD is all about.

Thanks Brian. Ill see if I can check out his ride. I would like to have a look and see how everything fit and what it feels like. So far all I have been looking at are pics internet sites and my buddies TA.

Thanks for the info wingfan. I am going to do the swap...but Ill keep doing more research on the boost idea.

FWIW, if I had to start over and I was set on running some boost, I'd go with the procharger. Fitment issues would be pretty minimal, and the power potential is really good. Maybe I'll feel different when my car is running again, but going turbo has been a series of one massive PITA after another.

I first started looking at the pro-charger and I evan got a catalogue from them about it, but with talking to a bunch of TA guys and ppl in my area everyone seemed to like the idea of the turbo instaed of a supercharger. Then they were telling me about the problem of the belt always slipping off and a few other stuff that kind of made me want to go back to the turbo idea.

From what I could tell from my reasearch....just like u said wingsfan....it would help with the room situation under the hood while giving me more power. The set up that I was going for is a streetable 500-550whp at low boost, but I wanted the ability to turn up the boost when I wanted to. Plus Im not a big fan of nitrous.

At least with this motor I have a few different options I can go with. But like u suggested I will investigate it a little more. Keep me posted about ur turbo LS1 project wingsfan.

They definitely have a point. Belt slippage can be a problem at high power levels. And, there's the whole parasitic loss thingy. I won't disagree that I think turbos are cooler, but there are plenty of F-bodies and vettes running around with prochargers that produce awesome real world results. There are certainly drawbacks to running a turbo as well, so it's not like they're a panacea or anything.

Yup. the question is whether or not you'd want/need that much power. Getting a ride in a heads/cam LS1FD is a great idea. It'll give you an idea of what you're getting into. I can't begin to describe how much I miss driving my car. The powerband is fantastic, and there's more than enough power to get you in trouble.

I'm hoping to have ~450-475rwhp off the wastegate spring, and who knows on higher boost?

I'm not a big fan of nitrous either.

Will do. I've pretty much been posting pictures as I make progress. I'm hoping to have the hotside done this weekend, then I can tackle the coldside piping, dive into getting the rear end wrapped up so I can get a driveshaft fabbed, and finish wiring the standalone. Should be ready sometime around August/September.

Well considering that 500RWHP is easily gained NA, I would imagine that 600 on boost wouldn't be that much to ask from an LSX. Unless you are aiming for a number that is closer to 800RWHP plus, NA would be more appropriate.
