Chevy 350 only turns over 3/4 way?

Ok today My uncle came out and we started working on my engine. We put Grannies mounts and oil pan on,as well as replacing the rear main seal, put on pressure plate flywheel etc.anyway after we put on the valve covers we started to turn the engine by hand.It turned smooth and easy until it turned about 300 degrees, then it was like it git a wall, same thing happens when turned the other way.

At first my uncle thought maybe the valve covers went the right ones, but even when we took the covers off it did the same thing.

I have the valve covers off and the intake off.when I turn the engine the valves move, and everything else rotates good, but then it jsut stops at that point.we even got a breaker bar out and horsed on it a bit but when it didnt budge we stopped.

Its weird as the engine is clean looking and it turns smooth and easy until that point.

So what do you guys think the problem is.

Thanks turns out it had crap in the engien.

Well we took the valve covers off and the heads off,we then replaced the head gasket.Turns out there was a good amount of packed dirt on the heads and the piston heads[the outer part not inside]

I guess when the stored it on the dirt floor it got some dirt in it,So we cleaned it out,and removed some carbon build up,and now it turns good.

Turns out one of the roller rocker arms was broken too,My uncle thinks since it was only one they probably didn't have it on straight and it wore out prematurely.the rest of the engine looks clean and in good shape, everthing turns smooth, and moves good.

Also we found out that it has a racing cam in it,not sure of the specs but it is an after market upgrade, hopefully they did some head work but probably not.

we just wiped it out

We just wiped it off since the dirt was just on the outer part of the piston head, the tube looked clean.we wiped off all the dirt on the piston heads, then cleaned them off with a rag and some carb cleaner.

we then rotated the engine to make sure it spun,[it did]and to allow us to wiped out the piston sleeves.there wasn't much crap down there it looked clean smooth.we then gently cleaned off the carbon build up[want much but since it was there we did it.

We then cleaned off the heads, wiped dirt out with a rag and then with carb cleaner.also cleaned off some carbon.

Biggest problem is that the Camaro Tranny we got is the later one and wont fit like Grannys said it will, sicne its later it has the buick bolt patter and wont fit to the Chevy 350 bell housing and the trannys bell housing wont fit the 350.

So we have to find a v8 tranny, which is hard as hell to find on for a v8 that isn't new[and expensive] or shot to hell.my uncle is trying to se if he can machine a mount to get the tranny to fit the v8 bellhousing.

just a heads up though next time you are building an engine. You should always use brake cleaner when cleaning your piston sleeves, your block that your heads get mounted on, your heads. Just because it looks clean doesn't mean it is. And the less dirt and **** you have in their the better off it is for you.

No one ever said a V6 would fit without a V8 belhousing. You V6 tranny is fine, you need a V8 belhousing to attatch to it.

Thanks guys.

Will use break cleaner next time.I fure I'll run the engine like a hundred miles and then change the filter and the oil and then change it again like at 500 miles.

Icecream man,the transmission case is drilled different, the case dosnt even fit the v8 bell housing I have, a 79 v8 camaro bellhosuing like granny said to use.

the bellhousing fits the engine but the tranny will not bolt up to the bellhousing.
the tyranny's bolt holes don't match and they stick out past the side a bit.
the case is entirely different.
