Chevy 305 5.0 good swap candidate?

i' am considering swappingg a v8 into my first gen and i can get a chevy 305 for 500 bucks freshly rebuilt with a truck around it and i'm wondering if combined with grannys kit wether or not it would be a good swap candidate? or if i should look elswhere its sitting in a 1984 chevy truck but its not the original engine so im not sure on specs for it. and i dont know what it came out of so i'm not sure on hp and tq #s or what to search google for any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Most everyone will tell you that it's not worth using the 305 when a 350 with a lot more potential is not much more expensive. If you can part the truck out and get your money back, then a free motor that runs isn't a bad deal.

You can always get the swap done, see how you like it, correct any issues, then do a 350 later - it's a direct replacement physically. The only difference is some exhaust manifolds and headers will only fit a 350 or a 305. That depends on the year the heads were built, some heads have the #1 and #8 stud unevenly spaced.

If you don't want to have to replace the motor to get more power, hold off for the 350 and let that 305 go. Every 305 built is a pig (they're NOTHING like the 5.0 by Ford) and the only way to get any power out of them is a power adder.
