Can it be done?

Hello all,

I'm brand new to the forum and would just like some input on some things. I am very interested in purchasing an RX-7 specifically to do a V8 swap. I currently have a 305 from an 87 Cutlass that has just been completely rebuilt. I was just curious if it were possibly to drop this into a first Gen(82 to be exact) model or would I be better off to look towards a second Gen? Also, does anyone have any suggestions on a good place to research what exactly needs to be done for either of these engine swaps ( first or second Gen.) as well as if there are any pre-fabricated kits geared towards this purpose.......

Any information anyone could provide would be extremely helpful. Thanks for your time guys.

Ok, first off there is a forum specifically made for this type of thing. Its called the other engine conversions forum. Look for it on the main page.

You WILL get flamed badly for doing this though if you post about it around here. I suggest you get a moderator to lock the thread so you don't have to go through that. I don't flame people for doing this as I wanted to put a turbo 3.8 from a GN in my 7 before. But others will flame you for it.

In case you don't PM a mod to lock the thread, MODS LOCK THIS THREAD TO SAVE Slipthenoose FROM A BAD FLAMING!!!

Here, I'll help you out, here is the forum you want to post in: https://www.rx7club.com/other-engine-conversions-non-v-8-118/
Any other 1st gen related stuff like suspension and whatnot can be posted here of course, but I highly suggest you don't post questions about swapping a piston engine into an RX-7 here.

Another good piston conversion is a 2.3 ford/thunderbird turbo. There's a thread by a guy who did it.

Good luck!

Actually, my girlfriends dad has a 9 second mustang.....it's quite....nice....though far from street legal now. And to answer that honestly though it was a shot at me, I don't like the k-car body style Love the RX-7 style, plus, I like the environment a little and don't really like burning oil......

yes it can be, but I mean a 305 isn't really the most powerful engine for that. But I mean it is a V8 none the less. I would say go to http://www.v8rx7forum.com/

You will find ALOT if not almost all of your answers there

yes, the 305 is the same as a 350 dimension wise and such so a grannys speed shop kit and away you go..

but I would suggest destroking the 305 to 302 ci and make it into a high RPM motor would be very similar to a rotary but just a crazy thought.

Awesome suggestion, I might actually look into taking that path.....I suppose a complete overhaul of the engine would be needed to prevent having to tear the engine out to rebuild it every few months after it blows. What sorta price range would you guesstimate on going down that road? Keep in mind my labour is free, and I have pretty much any tool I need.....as well as access to a machine shop with an older gentleman with quite a few talents.

WELL THE basic grannys kit is about 200 bucks, you will also need a drive shaft and a radiator. and some other ods and ends so lets say about 600 bucks for that. now to destroke the motor you are looking at some pretty substantial money I have only seen this done once and read about it a few times in hotrod magazine. get ahold of PAW www.pawinc.com for the kit.
