Calling LSX Opinions

*MODS- feel free to move to V8 sect when its open*

I am giving an honest thought about going to ls1/t56 in my gxl, Ive read the granny speed step-by-step and I feel confident enough to start saving up for the swap.

My question to you lsx guys is what was the most difficult/time consuming part of the swap, and what snags or unforeseen problems did you run into?

Ive crunched the numbers about 6 different ways, I know people who are very experienced with everything v8/Chevy who would leap at the chance to lend a hand, but none with experience with swaps into a car it "was never ment to be in" like an rx7. Im trying to not over look anything stupid that would later bite me in the hind end.

... Or I could cheap out and go carbed sbc/t56, but Im not to hot on that idea.

Don't go carburetor. You will regret it. Fuel injection is amazing. Car starts up amazing every time again and again :-) wiring was shitty but I bought a harness that was already in a fd with the lsx. Be prepared to spend 3 times more. Everything ******* cost 50 to 100. I built my exhaust out of ss and it's amazing. I've got poor boy longtubes, custom slp h pipe and slp Bullitt cats (50 each from slps ebay clearance store) electronic cutouts and Vibrant ultra quiet resonators, and borla mufflers. It's amazing. Did a 4 inch intake tube from jtr "jags that run", my swap is a 5.3 from a truck. I used a rebuilt t5,with a ls clutch big block bell housing, my advice is save the money and buy a full ls6 swap. You will thank me later for that. Here are my pics

Luckily LS motors are world class powerplants with a huge aftermarket and lots of swap support, but that being said any swap will nickel and dime you pretty badly, and parts for LS motors aren't as cheap. SBC with a carb is cheap and fun but not nearly as good for instant tuning, potential, and weight. In the end, decide how important outright performance is as compared to just having some fun.

Well in my area with people I know the ls1/t56 running with harness, ecu, and extra tid bits(usually intakes/headers) runs around 3000-4000. So assuming I land an ls1/tranny/harness/ecu for 3000 that puts my total swap at 5k to 8k which fits into what I've read on here(5-10k).

The ls1 from what I've heard is better with gas mileage and base HP/tq, as opposed to SBC carbed starts off with worse gas mileage and less base HP/tq. To me (n/a rotary) better gas mileage and doubling HP/tq is a double win, whereas carbed SBC is just a single win considering a possible 8-12 MPG. I know performance comes at a cost but damn it I wanna be able to afford to drive the thing.

You can buy a swap use it all but the ls1 use a 5.3 and sell the actual 5.7 engine and make 1500 or so back. My 5.3 was 500 2 years ago and the z06 cam and beehive springs really helped it :-)

ls1 support is pretty ridiculous...
Honestly, set a realistic goal in terms of how much you want to spend, or at least be OKAY with spending.

10k is easy to spend, but you'll have a very nice setup and one that's reliable too. If you've got anyone local with an lsx swap, go check it out in person.
If you're going to do the swap, might as well do it right.
Don't go super cheap, but don't go ***** out when you buy stuff.

My buddy has 10,000 miles on his swap... FD chassis. NO issues, lots of torque and has been reliable thus far.... 10,000 miles in 6months I think.

Check out the "other forum" when you have a chance.

Sorry haven't had time to check my thread with school going on.

I hear ya atli, I've been told that a few times and I am considering doing exactly that.

Perf0rmance, I don't plan on cheaping out, my numbers come from local prices on what I would need. As far as reliability goes I would most likely rebuild before beginning the swap, if needed. I haven't planned on that cost because I intend on buying a relatively low mileage on rebuild engine. May cost more but its less work on my end.
