Anyone complete a rearend swap, 8.8 or the alike?

I did a search, but i think i only saw jimlab finish one, i'm thinking about swapping, but would like some ideas about what to look for and such. basically i need a tall r&p set and the 4.10's would kill me. btw, its a '88 TII

Uh... someone already did a center section from the 4th gen Corvette rear end (the differential basically). You had to cut and re-weld the 'wings' shorter to bolt into the subframe of the car, and of course he modified the stub shafts so T-II axles would slide in, and I forget how the front mount was done, but it worked great. He had to do it for his 3800 turbo to work... 4.10s and that engine really suck.

It was like $1K said and done, but why do you really want longer gears so bad? With a T-56 its fine.

i've got a built 347 stroker and with 4.10, 22in. dia. tires and even a tall .63 overdrive i'm still to high, cruising at 70 hits 2700rpm (according to rpm calculator), i need something around 3.42's or little lower. i can get a .59 final drive for a t5, but its still about 2100 at 70mph w/3.42's

Man are you trying to make this an economy car? LOL.

I agree 3.42s would be about perfect for most mild v8s that aren't basically track only, but honestly if you keep your foot out of it its not that bad. Most guys on TC get 25-30 mpg highway... even carb guys get 20+.

If youre running fuel injection I dont see what the problem is. Even if its spinning a little higher you still got the throttle plate nearly shut and not a lot of fuel being dumped in.

i just dont wanna constantly run high rpms, i will be putting alot of highway miles on it, gas mileage isnt my BIGGEST concern (it is a concern none the less)

2700 rpms isnt **** dude.

Lots of v8 guys with stalled autos end up cruisng there over a wide range of speeds... yanno, zero to stall lock up rpm in that gear

It wont hurt anything, infact it would probably make sure the top end stays nice and oiled up!

no doubts about the oil, i have a high-pressure pump, i dont wanna wear it out quicker, i would like for it to last a little bit, i'll prob. be putting almost 80 miles a day on it when i go to school. i do have another ride if i have problems, but i'd rather take the 7

your right, i found a site after i posted that converts metric tire size to standard sizes. the size tires that i'm interested in would keep it around 2200 - 2300 at 70 mph, still a little higher than i wanted (1800 -1900) but if thats as low as i can get without changin out the rear-end, then thats what i'll live with

You could run some 3.90's in the mazda rear to get it down a little more.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think they can be found in the auto FD's. Auto FC's have 3.90's also but have a smaller ring gear.

o man, i felt bad just for not running a rotary in the rex, but a straight axle too?

edit: my topic was just switching out the third member for 8.8, not a whole live axle, my bad

lol, no bad feelings here.

good luck with the 8.8 center section, it has not been done for an FC yet. the c4 vette center has but it required more than the average joe's fab skills.

i could do it, i have no doubt, i straight axled my 2000 s-10 blazer using a hp d30 out of a cherokee and fab'ed my own radius arm w/coil spring suspension up front. its just would it be worth swappin an 8.8, financially?

well would it be worth it kind of depends how you look at it. it would be a lot of work... but in return you would have a stronger rear end that has tons of available gear ratios and 1000x the aftermarket of the stock rear....
