Anybody use a slap shift tranny?and other Tranny options

Ok I have an 83 FB[at least that is the year the guy said] I'm swapping in a 350 sbc,if I can find one in good condidtion local[guy at school thinks he might be able to get a 350 from a 69 camaro]

Anyhow the only option it looks like for my tranny is a Turbo 350 tranny.
The guy helping me with the car is selling it for 500 bucks,he also has a 600 holy 4bbl carb for sale to.the tranny has a b&m shift kit and the corvette gears.he estimated I'd be pulling about 2000-2500 rpms cruising around 60 mph,so that sounds good.

The thing is I really like a manual tranny but the only option for my car seems to be a t5[junk]a t5 world class[better, but harder to find and more $$]a racing built t5[Jerico etc much money and time]or a t56[hard to find and cost a bit].so is their another option?

So how is drivign a slap shif compare to an auto?is it just like the shifter on a motorcycle without the clutch or is it just like a regular auto?becosue I might jsut go slap shift and do manual later when I have money.

Slap shift is a shifter Chrysler used in some of their performance cars of the late 60's and early 70's. They worked just like regular shifters except it wouldn't allow you to go more than one gear at a time. Real pain in the ***.

Are you thinking of a ratchet shifter? Those return to the original position after you shift. You can still only go one gear at a time (at least, in the N-1-2-3 gate) but it's a lot less of a pain than the Chrysler shifter. I think decent ones go for the $200 range nowadays. I had one of these in my first car.

Whether the transmission shifts by itself or is fully manual depends entirely on the valvebody. I think you can get full manual valvebodies for the TH350 for under $400 nowadays. They shift harsh so your suspension and U-joints had better be stout. You'll still want to drive it like a manual around town - let off before shifting. Shifting below the torque converter's stall speed helps too. You'll still probably eat a bunch of U-joints Ah, good times.

A good automatic will cost a lot more than a manual trans. Where in MI are you? There is someone local who is selling a complete Saginaw 4-speed with bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, and shifter for under $400. T10s cost more, of course, but the price is dropping since you can buy *new* T10s for about $1200.

I live in Ionia MI

I live in Ionia MI 45 minutes east of Grand rapids and 45 minutes west of lansing.

You may be right it may be a ratchet shifter,I have heard shifters called slapshifts though so maybe its just a generic name for the style.

The guy is sellign it all for 500 bucks which seems like a good price for a rebuilt tranny with a shift kit in it.

I don't plan to drag it too much once in a while but mainly have fun in the street with it.The problem is that I was told on the torque central boards[actuall the board that spawned from it] that since I had the 410 gears and small tires I would need a tranny with overdrive or smaller gears or I would rev the hell out of the Engine,Ie 4000rpm at 50 mph.

Will the saginaw 4spd allow me drive without reving hte crap out of my engine?
Also will it hold up or will i have to worry about it snapping like hte t5?

About the ratchet shifter,do you jsut put it in drive and it automaticly shifts, with the option of you shifting yourself or is it like a manual on a motor cycle except no clutch?if its like once from a motorcyle except no cluthc it would be alright.but I don't liek the auto that you jsut put in drive and go.

I ran the engine rpm on my calculator it comes out at 3350rpm @ 60 mph with 4.10 gears in 4th 1:1 manual or 3td in th350
add 250 rpm for auto for slippage

.71 overdrive ie. t5 world class 2350rpm
.63 od tbi v8 camaro 2100

this is for stock tire size 205-60-15 fc rx7 24.6" dia

rx7's really need overdrive

How did you get the rpm figures?

How did you get the rpm figures?is their a formula or something?

the guy selling me the tranny said it was just rebuilt and had a b&m shift kit
added, and it has Corvette gears.not sure if after market or if the tranny just had different gears stock since it was from a vette,he said somehting about it had short enough gears to run well wit hthe 4:10s in my car.the guy said he had put a v8 in another rx7,and seems to know what he is talking about.

Would a warner super T10 hold up to an engine with 300-350ish hp and 300-340ish lbs of torque?mostly used on the street with the ocasional trip to the strip?

Slap Shift is a Chrysler name, might even be trademarked. I suppose it might be like Positraction (Chevy trademark name) where people just use the name to refer to anything remotely related.
