Well here it is guys. This deserves to be here in hopes to save several some heartaches with wheel fitments and questions. It's late and I'm gonna do the short version.
17"
Low offset Fitment
8 and 9 +35 will work 225/45 255/40
Standard Fitment
8.5 and 9.5 +40 235/45 and 265/40
Common Symmetrical
8.5 F/R +40 245/40
Sleeper Fitment - MAnny Lozano
9.0 F/R +45 255/40/17,
Max Symmetrical
9.5 F/R +50 265/40/17
18"
Follow rules above while subtracting 5 from the aspect ratio/profile
However, there are some proprietary fitments for this diameter.
Johnny Fitment
18,9 and 10 +50 255/35/18 and 285/30/18
SSR Competition Fitment - Mike was first I saw with this, running V700
18,9.5 +50 front and rear, 265/35 or 285/30 all around.
Cooper Fitment
18,10 F/R +50-+52 285/30/18
Now these fitments have another variable to consider and that's tire selection. Each model may have a different section width regardless of what their sidewall may read. Also rim protectors are a commonly left out variable to take into consideration to avoid rubbing.
Alright guys. To all a good night. Please do email or call if you have any questions. This info is the easy part. The hard part is spending as little time as possible to find the wheels which follow these guidelines and your functions. That's where we can help. Should you be interested in some wheels or questions about fitment vs. function please email. I'd be glad to help. We have an array of wheels available in these fitments. Most in the upper range, but that's where we like to keep it. Don't forget about the club discount. If you're not registered and just a reader please do register. It will entitle you to a lot of savings. If you don't own a rotary that's fine. We take care of people who show interest in our "raring commodities" and like learning about our cars. lol.

Yes that will fit but the consensus is that the + sizes should also be wider than stock. i.e. 8.5" wide would be a better upgrade. However imo you will see a benefit.
What wheel is it?
FYI, 2005 Subaru STI 5x114.3 17x8 +53 BBS Forged wheel. HINT HINT. Shoud be virtually hubcentric for FD. I think it's off by 1mm in diameter. lol.
Found this out when comparing our Zeal V6 coils for the 2004 model with that of the 2005 model. Found out that there are minor changes that need to be done to the lower shock bracket. In the process noticed the stampings on the outside lug area of the BBS wheels.
This would be great for a cheap upgrade. Even comes stock with right size O.D. OK everyone start looking for 2005 STI ONLY. 2004 is still 5x100.
Ciao.
Rishie from Auto R & D has schooled me quite a few times on wheel fitments for the FD. It's nice to see that he tries to share his information. If you guys want to get a hold of him try wholesale@autornd.com
I doubt he's dealing with retail much anymore but the type of guy he is i'm sure he'll be glad to provide some info.

BTW, stock wheels on JDM FDs were 17x8 up front.

ok here are my choices
17x8 5-114.3 40offset
18x8 5-114.3 40offset
i was gonna go with wider ones, but ill just b happy with my stock width.
after some reading, i figured my two choices will fit.
but like i said.... will 18x8 rub?? lol

As far as tire sizes goes, 17x8: 235/45-17, 18x8: 235/40-18.
