Wheel/Tire fitment

I know...I Know... There is a Official Wheel and Tire Fitment Thread but ive gone thru about 15 pages out of 112 or so and I still didnt get all the info I need. All I need to know is if I get 17x7 rims with a 40 offset all the way around what size tire would best fit and would they stick out at all...... I know guys youve been thru this before so im sorry....
its a 87 GXL

Use the graphic here to calculate a good tire size. Take your current wheels and tires as a comparison so that the final tire you decide on will be about the same overall diameter, otherwise your speedometer will be off, among other things. You can see just how different by dividing your old tire diameter by your new tire diameter; that's the fraction of your old tach reading that your new tire diameter will yield.

i.e. if your current setup has a 24" diameter, and what you want has a 25" diameter, at 100mph your new tach reading will be:
100mph * 24" / 25" = 96mph

So long story short, check some tire options and try to make the new diameter as close to the old one as possible. I'm guessing you'll go with 205 width on a 7" wheel, so see how 40, 45, 50, and 55 series tires calculate vs. your current wheels and tires. (start with 50)

OK i jus did some more research how does a 215/50-17 tire sound? Any clearance problems? Will they stick out from the fenders?

Sounds promising, though I think people usually go 7.5" with 215s

A stock rim is 7" +40. So why would it stick out??

I run 225's with no problems on my stock 7" rims.

I am running 215/45 R17 with no rubbing problems at all! However, I still feel like 18" wheels would look at lot better!

A 50 sidewall is too tall, IMO. On my old 17's I ran a 215/45ZR17, and it didn't throw off the speedo by much, if at all. The difference in size between those and the stockers (diameter) is ~1/2", probably less. This isn't speculation, I just looked at the two sets side by side in my basement.

This was on a 17x7" wheel btw. With a +35 offset... I ran spacers.

I run 225's on my stock size TII wheels (not TII wheels, though) as well, and there are no problems. With Eibach Pro-kit and Tokico blues.

Depending on your suspension you can run up to a 225/45/17 on that 7.0" wheel. It will look a little bulgy but is doable. Regardless that wheel is gonna look extremely sunken in the rear. It's a FWD wheel fitment. Would not do the FC much justic imho.

you'd be better off getting a 7.0" +15 or +20 to make it look right. There are plenty of cheap staggered wheels out there. You can easily run a 8" wide wheel up front as well.
