wheel fitment

Will a 18x9.5 fit on the front with stock springs? Or are coil overs needed? The offset I am looking at is 38mm, but maybe with more it would work?

38mm would work on the rear if my calcs are right (thanks JimLab)

Maximum front spacing, front wheel - 3.5"
Maximum back spacing, front wheel - 7.5"

Maximum front spacing, rear wheel - 4.0"
Maximum back spacing, rear wheel - 7.5"

10.5" (wheel width + 1") / 2 = 5.25"
38mm = 1.5"
Back spacing = 5.25" + 1.5" = 6.75"
Front spacing = 10.5" - 6.75" = 3.75" = Nope!

You'll need at the very least a +45mm offset (7.02" back/3.48" front). A +51mm offset would be ideal and would give you 0.25" clearance front and back (7.26" back/3.24" front).

You can cheat a little on the maximum back spacing if you get coilovers and aftermarket trailing arms in the rear.

As Jim said, +47 to +51 offset would be best for up front. SSR makes a few reasonably priced wheel models in that size/offset combination that are very light -- SSR Competition, GT7, and GT2 -- 18x9.5 +50 offset.

In the for sale section under tires/rims Fritz Flynn is selling a set from his FD which are 18x10 CCW's +50 with Hoosier R3S03 tires with a track day on them. They have black anodized centers and titanium hardware. Makes the rims about 19lbs 10oz or so. $1800 which is a pretty good deal as the rims themselves cost more than that.

That would be a great setup but it does require coilovers.

What are you building now? LS1/FD I assume...

I saw that you sold your turbo kit from the Camaro.

Sorry, but those are some nasty wheels.....

Real SSR GT7s are available from tire rack. A set of 18x9.5 +50 offset is $2036+shipping. Pretty reasonable for the quality. You can get the SSR Competitions in the same size/offset for $1800.

With a 9.5" wheel, although the same offset may work for another width.

To get the nominal wheel width, add one inch to the rated wheel width. The rated width is the measurement from the inside edge of each flange and doesn't take into account the flanges themselves. 8.5" becomes 9.5", 9.5" becomes 10.5", etc.

Convert the offset from mm to inches by dividing by 25.4. Divide the nominal wheel width by 2 and add the offset. That's your backspacing measurement. Make sure it's less than the maximum values I posted above for best fitment.

Now, take the nominal wheel width and subtract the backspacing measurement. That's your front spacing. Make sure it's less than the maximum values I posted above.

It's not just the offset that decides brake clearance, it's the profile of the wheel face. For example, Volk lists what size/offset/pad height will clear "large FD brakes".

IIRC, those are the "race" version of the 3-piece Modular wheels. Don't think I'd trust those on the street.

Rynberg,

Can you direct me to the Volk website you talking about for clearance of big break kits?

In addition, let us use Volk wheel as an example, if their wheel is 18X9, what offset will create enough room for the kits?

Thanks!

http://www.rayswheels.co.jp/index.html

click on english in the bottom

then click on wheels...

then click on the wheel of interest eg. SF winnings.

in the little blurb for this particular wheel it states that for the 18" inch fitment OFFSET B is the selection needed to clear big brake calipers for Skyline,....RX-7...

then if you click on "size and price" you will get the offset table...

so for 18x9 in front in SF winning I would need +41 in Offset B
