The H just is probably shorthand for Hyper Silver

Nope, from SSR's website:

Comp-H
*2-piece hybrid construction
*Semi-solid, forged center precision lap-welded to a forged rim section
*50% stronger with a 9% increase in hardness
*Larger diameters and widths now available using hybrid construction

How do you know which one you're getting? For the GT2 and GT2H they overlap on the 18" size, and Tire Rack doesn't specify which one is for which fitment.

Sure would like to end up with the 'H' for the stronger construction.

I think they indroduced the "H" construction in part to be able to offer the bigger sizes and offsets needed for many of today's cars.

Generally, you don't see too many 1-piece forged wheels much bigger than about 18x9.5.

The H are definitely stronger. The original Comp were pretty infamous, cracking at various track events.
