track and street

I know you can adjust suspension so that it's softer or stiffer but is it a reasonable option to buy a suspension meant for racing and have it adjusted for street driving regularly and readjust it for when the car sees track time

I think it's best to look at it the other way round.

Buy a good street suspension for performance (e.g. adjustable dampers with Eibach Pro-Kits) and adjustable swaybars and you'll be very well equipped for anything you do on a track. As much as people talk about how their car is prepped for "racing", very very few really have the driving skills, testing time, and setup know-how to adjust a car with more advanced suspension than that. More adjustments (aka more "racing") will only prevent the driver from getting good results from the car.

Basically there's one perfect shock setting for each spring rate and that'll give the best performance and comfort. Going softer will make it a little more compliant, but it'll get bouncy. Really what you need to do is get some decently stiff springs and some really good shocks. Good shocks make all the differnece between a terrible ride on soft springs and a good ride on stiff springs.
