touring to R1 upgrade

do you guys think i would notice a difference upgrading from touring shocks to 93 or 94+ R1 shocks? i've always read that the springs are the same, but that the R1's have more aggressively valved shocks. this sounds appealing to me because i'd like to autocross next season and i believe this would help

You are better off just going to Konis at that point.

interesting. how is the ride on the street with the konis on stock springs if they are all the way soft?

Stock springs and Koni's at full soft is pretty close to stock. I ran this setup for a long time and I liked it although I turned up the fronts about half a turn. I have the shock dyno plots for Koni, stock, and others if you want to compare them, just email me.

i ran Koni yellows and stock touring shocks on the black FD. the Koni's were at their lowest height setting and the ***** were all the way soft.

I thought that the ride quality was just bearable.......

It would be interesting to see if raising the spring perches to their stock height setting would change your impression. Lowering w/ stock springs just reduces suspension travel causing the car to hit bumpstops alot easier than normal.

howard coleman's got a nice writeup on fd suspensions, theres 3-4 threads where he's said the same thing, cant miss it

I find Koni yellows set at fully soft and stock springs to be a little stiffer than a base model, but not as stiff as an R1. I don't have any issues with the ride. The R1 shocks are good shocks but if I were going autocrossing I'd get Konis for their adjustability.

FWIW you can buy Koni yellows for about $500ish.

Damon...besides the price difference, would you use Koni yellows or a set of Tein Flex's?

Depends.

Personally I'd never bother spending more than a Koni and some aftermarket springs for a street driven vehicle. For a competition vehicle it's different. Is the current setup truly a weak point of the car? What do the rules allow? With the goal in mind of speeding up the car is money best spent on fancy shocks or on some other part of the car?

Tokiko makes 5 way adjustables. I'm sure they're probably available for our cars, right?

I run the Koni yellows, my experience is the same.

Not to hyjack the thread, but I'm in the position to consider Tein coilovers for autocross as an upgrade (rather than say just adding Eibach springs to the yellows).

I read a little about people running Tein Flex, but I noticed they also have a Tein HT (tarmac), has anyone used those? The spring rates are high, but this is normal for autocross-- however, I think I'd hate it on the street.
