Tire Size w/ 17's on an FD

I have done some searching and now I would like to know what everybody else is running. I am really interested in the sizes you guys are running on the fronts. I have heard that you can fit 255/35 or even 40/ 17 on the fronts and upwards of 285/whatever/17 on the rear. The reason is, I want to buy the S03's and the size I want on the front is a 245/40/17. I pretty sure that will fit, just looking for feed back.
Thanks

When Mazda fitted 17's to the later models the tyre sizes were 235/45R17 front and 255/40R17 on the rear.

Front wheel width was 8, rear was 8.5.

We need to know the wheel width and offset to answer your question.

Typically, people run 17x8.5 front and 17x9.5 rear or 17x9 all around.

For the 17x8.5/17x9.5 fitment, the best tires sizes would be 235/45 or 245/40 17 front and 265/40 rear.

If you run 17x9 all around, you will want to run 255/40 17 all around.

Borderline offsets may have an effect on tire size choice.

I have just purchased this car. It has 17in blitz type 2 rims. I am not sure of the offset or the width. I think the rear is a by 10 and the front is by 9, I think. I have ordered S03's, Rear = 265/40/17 and Front = 245/40/17. The fronts used to be 235/35/17, so I hope these will fit. The rear tires I am not worried about. I will have the tire shop measure my rims and offset so I know for sure for the furture. Just checking on what every body else runs.

The Blitz rims don't have a sticker, stamp, or plaque on the inside of the rim giving the size and offset? Maybe you could look again to double check?

Those tire sizes will be fine.

Thanks you guys, I would hate to spend almost $400 on tires that will not fit the fronts. I am just going to have the tire shop measure the off set and the width of the rim. You are right though, I have can not find any marking/stickers that state the size and off set on the rim. Did the Blitz rims have a standard off set? Thanks again for your help. Tomorrow when they are installed I will write back with the size, off set and any rubbing issues if I have them. Coilovers are next :-) :-) :-)

Those punks forgot to measure my rim widths and offsets, so I still don't know what I have. Will find out myself some how. I have just put a 245/40/17 up front with no rubbing, might have been able to go to a 255. I am pretty sure my rim on the front is no greater then a 9in. Not 100% sure.

The "old" standard upgrade was 235/45/17 front, 275/40/17 rear... recommended by tuners like PFS and Pettit.

Lately folks have become (needlessly IMO) obsessed with diameters, and have run narrower (or in the case of 18" wheels) or extremely low-profile tires to maintain stock tire diameters.

You can run any combination that works for you based on your handling preference and wheel requirements, from 245/40 all around, to 234/40 f, 275/40 r, or anything in between like 255/40 all around or 255/40 front, 275/40 rear. I would avoid any combo that makes the front tire significantly taller than the rear.

I put 265/40/17 on the rear. I would have liked to stay with 275/40/17 but the S03s do not come in 275/40/17.

That was my exact set up prior to picking up new tires.

I'm going to likely go w/ Toyo T1S next time out due they're being on the order of 5 lbs lighter per tire than S03s.

I've got 245/40-17 and 265/40-17 S-03s on my car. My wheels are 8.5" wide in front and 9.5" in the rear.

Be careful when reporting the rim width measurement. The actual width of the rim will be an inch or so wider than the "bead" or nominal width (which is how rim widths are normally reported). For instance, I have some 10" wide rims (nominally) that are >11" wide (actually).

Thats a good (and irritating) point, Max. If you need to check the width (nominal) of your wheels, there is often a small stamp or sticker on the inside somewhere that will show what size the manufacturer sold it as.
