Without droning on about why I want to do this, can anyone comment about potential problems with running a tire that is one size wider than recomended for a rim width?

Specifically, I want to put 265/35 18's on a 18x8 wheel, and technically the 265/35 requires an 18x9 rim.

i read about a japanese tuner trying to create a better drift car... they ended up putting a wider tire than reccomended on the rear rim, thus causing the tire to have a rounded sidewall instead of a nice squared-off side, and because it was rounded the tire then broke loose easier... the potential problem would be losing the rear-end A LOT in corners, especially in rain, off-camber turns, etc... i would not reccomend it unless you are creating a car specifically for drifting as this jap. tuner was...

pull up the specs for the tire you are looking for and see the "range" of widths it will fit on...

as an Example... 265/35 SO3's go on 9-10.5" rims...
SO2's 9-10"

Although, now that I looks, it appears a 9 is the narrowest. you'll have to really convince the tire shop to do that, and it ain't gonna fit well...

Where would I find a good source for wheel tire combination recomendations?

Actually, my front wheels are 7" and they are running one size wider than recomended already. I bought the wheels used with the tires already installed. I never noticed it until I was cleaning the rims the other day & saw that the front & rear tire sizes are the same. Had to double check because I know the rims are different sizes. Sounds like I'm better off changing the fronts, just wanted to push the width as much as possible.

if you look on tireracks website, you can click "specs" of the tires you're running and it wiull show you the optimum width for each size, as well as the acceptable range..

I bought a set of Niche Shocking Shock wheels for my RX out on eBay. The fronts are 18x7 & the rears are 18x8. Both wheels are running 235/40s and because of the difference in widths it looks like I'm running 17s in back & 18s in the front. I'll see if I can’t get a photo, basically it’s just an optical illusion but it's a bad one. Anyway, I want to put the widest width I can fit on the rears to balance the car out.

I know that I could put narrower ones in the front but that's moving in the wrong direction in my mind. However, I have found that 255/40s would fit appropriately according to some of the Web sites I checked out today. The problem with the 255/40s is they are twice as much as anything else for some unknown reason. I thought about 255/35s but they are technically shorter than the fronts also so I'd be back to the same thing.

What I’d really like is to find a set of 18x9 Shocks that would fit my RX but I’ve been looking for those for months now. Not too many of those around.

Well, other than the fact that you bought some heavy *** wheels, on an 8" wheel, 245 is really the rec'd max size. BTW, some tires are not exactly what they say. I've heard Kumhos run a bit thinner than they say(245 is really 235) and Yok's run a bit wider. 265s would possibly bulge and be dangerous. I would just deal until the tires wore and then buy 225s F and 245s R or something similar.

Oh-Oh, what don't I know about the Shock's? Sounds like they are not a good choice. Are they heavier than most?

I'm working on buying a set of used Fikse FM10s, but wont know on that one for a couple weeks. So just in case. . .are there any issues with Fikse wheels? (other than trying to get a fitment, which is a real challenge when they weren't made for an RX to start out)

I am assuming this is for an FD? Apparently you didn't know they are an ugly and very heavy wheel. I seriously suggest you sell them and put almost anything else on the car. Make sure you get wheels of a proper width and offset. Sorry for sounding harsh but buying wheels requires research and it seems you didn't do any.

If you are running 18s, you should go up to atleast an 9" width to maintain similar load rating capability. This would put you at a 245/35 or 255/35 tire. Listen to SleepR1, he knows his stuff. Running that wide of a tire on an 8-inch rim is not a good idea.
