The right coil overs.

So my fd will be out of the paintshop this week and aside from my boost gauge and vaccum lines I'm replacing my car is in desperate need of new shocks and springs.

I have read as much as I can on the subject but I'll start here, the car is a street car and strictly that with spirited weekend use in the canyons ect.

I have been looking into coil overs with a budget of 1700 firm, unless I decide to save more. In my research most people say the qc on most jdm coils are spotty and is best to do like a KonI + spring set up. Does this information still hold true? I have been looking into the greddy type s/ rea street coils. And the tein street flex.

Lastly I have read it is worth noting the ohlins coil overs are the best and might be worth the 2300 for street.

Anyone want to help a noob out? Any insight wold be awesome

I had a Koni yellow/RSR down spring set up for awhile. The ride was nice and the car handled great. I'd probably still be on 'em had I not stumbled across a great deal on a set of nice coilovers.
I now have a set of Zeal B6 coilovers on my FD and couldn't be happier.
For the record: My car is 90% street driven and 10% at the track (Laguna Seca, which is close to my house). The spring rate on my suspension is 11K front/10k rear.
Hope this helps!

Did the zeals reduce right height at all? I am not really into "stance" and certainly dont want to roll my fenders because the suspension lowers the car to much.

And how is the 11k/10k for street is it to rigid?

It's actually pretty soft; comparable to stock R1 suspension. The Zeals are height adjustable, like most coilovers. ...And I'm with you on the stance thing.
Here's a pic. My fenders were never rolled and the wheels are 17x10, +48 offset.

Plenty of great options, we offer a full one year warranty on all the used coilovers we sell. We can get a set of Ohlins PCV in your price range along with Aragosta. The Aragosta will be even more street friendly and I think would meet your needs. Feel free to PM me to further discuss options and availability, we are always here to help. They are both great coilovers and Ohlins definitely has the prestigious name given the Aventador uses them.

I went from Konis to Ohlins - quite a nice upgrade, with a better ride in spite of the higher spring rate with the Ohlins. I would put these as a couple of top choices depending on the price point.

I'm trying to make the same decision. I was going to try to get a new set of dfv's but I don't really know what to do as this point as my budget has been spent on more engine stuff because of a used opportunity.

I know i've read howard's thread like 3 times, and he says the Tein's are good, as well as the Pettit Racing coils, which I don't know are available anymore, but both are cheaper than a set of used Ohlins....

What are you doing with your car (i.e. what type of driving)?

If you go used then they are a bit more affordable. Our used Ohlins line up include:

DFV $1899
PCV $1499
Older Gen PCV $1199

There are a lot of great options for under $2000 with my highest recommendations going to Ohlins, Aragosta, Quantum (more track orientated), HKS and Zeal. From personal experience selling at least 75 different sets of coilovers, I would avoid coilovers with spring rates below 8k (these are only for drag) and avoid above 14k(more suited for the track only), anywhere between 9 to 12k is the sweet spot.

I'm going to be tooling around on weekends/weekdays and then doing some autocrossing and fun track days (me and a couple of friends rent out a local track for a few days a year of just blasting around). I do come from a stance background, and love a well lowered car, but I want to avoid doing that because the FD's are a ton of fun to drive.

Purerx7, thanks for the information, I've been through your guys's website hundreds of times looking already, I'm for sure tempted on alot of

I just decided to give the Pettit's a shot, we shall see how it goes, and if I do decide to upgrade I know the Ohlin's are the ish.

Have you looked into Fortune Auto? Don't see a lot of people with them, but I'm running them on my FD and love them so far. Got the basics with a swift spring upgrade for like 1350 and it's a comfortable ride while still being aggressive. I'm lowered to 25" all around with a 11/9k spring setup. Customer service is great and they can be serviced in the states if need be. Also Fortune Auto does this cool sponsorship if you race and place in the top 2 or 3 and you can earn cash towards rebuilds or upgrades.

I recently installed the new petting racing coilovers that k sport makes. Pettit revalves them and puts different spring rates on them. They were @ 1300. My spring rates are 12 frt and 10 rear. They are not that stiff. I did an auto cross a couple weekends ago and they performed great. I highly recommend them

I also have FA coilovers but with 10k/8k FA spring. These coilovers are really comfortable. I did a lapping day last weekend and they performed great. Got only about 600 miles on them, but so far so good.
