Please Teach me Suspension
Hey guys,
Once again, I am looking for some information. I would like to replace my current stock suspension setup on my 93 FD in favor for something that will make my car handle better for mostly street, and some track use. I also simply want to replace the stock setup because it is old and worn out. Everyone talks about coilover systems. They are so expensive though. What is the benefit? I am not sure if I want something that can be adjusted 20 different ways. Several choices would be fine with me. I also don't have 2k to spend on suspension. So what is the best setup for under a thousand? Is there one? I was thinking about some Eibach springs with the 5 way adjustable Illumina shocks......or struts,....;which reminds me I know what struts and springs are, what are considered shocks?
Thanks as always,

Struts
The term is used for suspensions that use MacPherson struts. Our FDs use coil-spring-over-shock tubes (thus the shortened version of "coil-over"). So technically you need shocks for the FD (and FC for that matter).

Exactly
R1 shocks will be termed "Hard" shocks.
Don't worry, they'll combine nicely with the H&R springs. I have this setup, and they perform equally well whether on the public roads or on the race circuits.
Don't forget to order new rubber sheets and pillow ball mounts, if those rubber pieces have never been replaced. These new rubber pieces help considerably in road ride quality over bumpy surfaces.
Mazda Competition parts is THE source for OE and performance FD Rx7 parts. Sign up for their program. You need only two race results per year to qualify for the discounts on all stock parts.
Mazda Comp phone number is 1.800.435.2508. Steve Sanders will be the Mazda Comp manager you'll be sending your race results to. The Mazda Comp fax number is 949.222.2650
You should consider the Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks that Mazda Comp offers for our FD, since they're only slightly firmer than the stock R1 "hard" shocks, especially if you plan to do more autocrosses and high speed drivers schools. Cost-wise, they're about the same price as the stock R1 shocks.
Good luck.
