Unhappy Noise from the Rear ?

This is on 94 FD. I have had this noise for some time now. I thought it was toe links, but after i have replaced them, the sound was still there. I didn't even know that the previous owner has put M2 toe links. I also have tokiko iluminas with stock springs.

It's kind of klunking noise it happens between shifts, or when i go over bumps or basicaly if i park the car and put it in a gear, When i try to push it back and forth i hear that klunking. I can hear it the most when i go over bumps.

It only happens when the car fully warms up. I don't know if that has to do with anything, but when it's cold and if i go over bumps or whatever i can't hear it. Then as it warms up there it is. I'm affraid that it might have to do with differential or drivetrain, not really sure. When i'm under the car and i think it comes from right rear wheel, but then again, i can also hear it on left rear wheel.

Please if someone has any info on what could this be, Please reply here. Any suggestion will do, but don't make me buy all kinds of crap and it's not that.

Thanks a lot guys

Funny thing is, I've fixed my rear hatch rattle and that's what I thought your problem was at first glance, reading just the first paragraph and a half. Then as I read more, I realized it had nothing to do with your hatch. So to be honest with you, your case is rare, from what I've been able to find out on this forum. Most people's clunking noises come from the front.

It is likely your "pillow ball" bushings in the rear. I have a web page about them, including how to replace them with hand tools:
http://www.maxcooper.com/rx7/how-to/...lls/index.html

It could also be that the rod ends on your M2 toe links went bad. Try to steer the rear wheels with your hands while the car is parked. If you can steer them a little, the rod ends are probably bad. I replaced mine with some QA-1 rod ends from Jeg's. You need two each of 122-XML10 and 122-XMR10. There was a thread titled "toe links" (I think) about this topic in this section recently.

I'm the one that started that toe link thread, because i thought it was them. I installed those rod ends that you told me to get, and i still have the same clunking noise.

I don't know if it was those pillow bushings because, i can only hear them when the engine becamse hot, when it reaches it's operating temperature. I think if it was some kind of bushing it would klunk all the time.

I honestly don't want to start buying those bushing unless i know for sure it's them.

Any other opinions?
Thanks

no connection to operating temps, but could be a broken rear subframe. Carl

well it looks like my problem is Wheel bearing. I ordered that thing today and i should have it here tomorrow, so i'm gonna try to replace it tomorrow then.

Anybody got a good write up with pictures on how to replace these rear bearings?

Thanks

For some reason that I cannot fathom, temp has played a part in the clunking on my car, too. The noise was/is bushings, but they did/do seem to change with how warm the car was/is.

To replace the rear wheel bearings, you'll need to get the old bushings pressed out of the upright and have the new ones pressed in. That usually involves removing the rear upright and taking it to a shop, or just having a shop do the whole job.

That said, my wheel bearings have held up like champs through many hard miles and lots of heat from the brakes. It can be hard to pinpoint the problem, but I would suspect suspension bushings before wheel bearings based on my experience with the car and its clunks. It might be worth another careful look at the bushings before you go through the hassle of replacing the wheel bearings.

Well, we replaced wheel bearing. It was pretty hard but we did it. As i said earlier i replaced those toe links with those new rod ends.

However, I STILL HAVE THE DAMN CLUNKING NOISE!

I don't know what else to do. All of the bushings are ok, I checked each one of them, i can't see where the damn noise is coming from.

I don't know what else to do, honestly.

It is almost certainly the pillow ball bushings. They might tighten up if you lift the car and the suspension droops. I suggest removing the traling link bolt through the bushing in the middle of the lower arm and move it around with your hand. It should be tight and hard to move with your hand, but I think you will find that it is a bit loose and won't be hard to move. You have eliminated the other possibilities, so it seems very likely to be the pillow ***** (there are 6 identical pillow ***** to replace in the rear susp, 3 per side). These are known to go bad, so it is likely that you need new ones anyway.
