Nasty Old Ramy Rims--Tires?

I got these old, nasty, used rims from Ramy a few months ago. I made a request about two years ago, if he ever came across a set of OEM RX-7 17 inch rims to buy them for me and ship them out. Well he did, not that he is ever quick to answer emails, but I would say he came through. Now that I have rebuilt my transmission I figure it is time to put some tires on these 10 year old rims.

Question what is the best tires for Alabama. We get a lot of rain here and it is quite hot. The R2 is stock except for a few small upgrades to the engine. The suspension is as it came from the factory. What size and brand is the best of an old man with old, nasty, used, rims?

As a side note, not sure what "used" means to Ramy but I have a feeling I would like other "used" parts off this car besides these rims.

Nice nasty looking rims. Took me a while to read the sarcasm.

Consider the Toyo T1R and Kumho MX. Both have very good wet weather abilities.

I used to have the Toyo T1S and I considered it a bit too soft feeling and as a result a bit slow to react to inputs. Delivered a nice cushy ride though.

The Kumho offers a bit more dry performance and is probably a bit "stiffer". The Kumho's react a bit more quickly due to the stiffer structure and the steering feel and breakaway characteristics are very nice. Ride quality is very acceptable also. I've been very happy with this tire.

Also might want to do a search here as there are some good tire threads.

What size would you go for? I have several options here. I am concerned of getting too much tire and it effects the steering. Stick to the stock sizes or is a little bigger better. I run 245/45-16 on the rear and stock on the front and have found that to be a good balance for the 16 inch rims.

As for Ramy. What can I say. I have never been disappointed and often surprised.

I'd go 245 all around on an 8" rim at a sidewall height that matches the stock diameter in a typical "Plus One fitment". That way you can also rotate them easily.

I ran 245s all around when I was running the stock 16" rims and it was perfect. 245s are the better size for a 8" rim IMO.

fwiw, I'm currently running 255/4017 on 17" x 9" rims all around on Koni shocks and regular H&R springs but I do track the car. If I didn't, I'd probably run a setup such as yours with 245s and stock springs on my Koni shocks.

Are they 8" all around? I always though the rears were 8.5".

The rears are 8.5 inches, these are 17 inch diameter rims, g-man . I'd run 255/40 rear and 245/40 front.

Yoko es100s are junk, I don't recommend them.

I have a thread i started recently in this section listing lots of top tier street tires......

michelin ps2
bstone re-01r
goodyear f1 gs-d3
yoko advan neova ad07
dunlop direzza d1

those are the five i'm considering. remember, your tires are the only part of the fd that comes in contact with the road

Here is another good tire, these were rated a bit higher than the BFG too, they are the Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval w/UNI-T http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...num%3D25WR6FHW http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...ay.jsp?ttid=61
