Jic Flt A2

I've done quite a bit of research and I think that the JIC FLT A2's are for me. I was wondering if someone could help me figure out what spring rates I should get and what size piston (40mm or 45mm).

I have a 1994 FD, which I use primarily for street. However I do try to go to VIR at least once a year if not more to practice my high speed driving. I am also interested in doing a little bit of Autocrossing. No drag racing for me though. So if anyone has any opinions or ideas then please let me know.

It would also be useful if someone could tell me where I can get the best price on these coilovers. Thanks.

Do you happen to have these coilovers? I haven't heard much about how they have performed in Autocrosses or on Road Courses.

I sent Rishie a PM, but haven't heard back yet. Do you know what kind of prices they usually quote? The best deal I have found is $1,480. Do they have a better deal than that? Here is where I found that price:

I paid a little more actually. Rishie may match that price though. I have dealt with Rotary Xecret too. They are pretty good to deal with as well. Rishie would probably be able to get them much quicker.

Rated R1 do you autocross with your car? I'm assuming you have the FD in you avator. What do you think of the JIC's in autocross? What spring rates do you have on your JIC's? Sorry for so many questions.

I decided to go ahead and get a set, but I am trying to decide on spring rates and all. I figured that if Jim Labreck (sp.) bought a set and Max Cooper thinks that he would look at these first if he were getting a new set, then they should be good enough for me.

By the way I am getting them through Rishie. He didn't offer quite as low of a price as Rotary Xecret, but he has helped a lot of people out and is a nice guy so I figured I would stick with someone I trust.

Question for you Rishie, or anyone else...

I have a pair of FLT-A2's on the way, (I would have ordered them through you Rishie, but I have to support my own forum. )

I am looking for three settings I can start with. Please fill in the gaps:

1) Settings for Pure road cruising. No racing, just for a long trip, looking for the most COMFORT.

Info needed: Adjustments for all 4 wheels. Ride hieght recomendations.

2) Settings for Street Racing. A mix between the street version, with occasional stop-light action

Info needed: Adjustments for all 4 wheels. Ride hieght recomendations.

3) Settings for Pure drag racing track settings.

Info needed: Adjustments for all 4 wheels. Ride hieght recomendations.

4) Settings for Pure road racing. IE 30 minute 2.5 mile lap sessions.

Info needed: Adjustments for all 4 wheels. Ride hieght recomendations.

Thanks,

Mike

Dang, $1480? I know a place that has them for about $1250 to $1300 (depends on the exc. rate). What's that catch? It's the speed shop in Japan where I bough mine from.

Seriously though, I've had FLT-A2's on for about four months now on my FC. I love them. That are valved very stiffly. But from what I was told by those in the know the ones sold on this side of the Pacific are re-valved to be a bit softer. Trust me - this is a positive thing. Mine are not made for the lousy roads around Seattle. Once the local tracks start having lapping days this season I'll really enjoy them.

Thanks for the offer Jason. I will keep that in mind incase something falls through, which I don't see happening right now.

I'm still waiting to hear from people as to what the best spring rates are. I was told that it depends on your application. So which applications result in which spring rates? Anyone.

here's my review I wrote up a while ago. I'm a nOOb when it comes to suspension info, but as far as a feel goes, this should give you an Ideal

I'm pretty new to suspension too. I checked out your review. So what did you think of the car at Thunderhill? You said you were going to report back after you went in August. Was the suspension too hard or too soft for high speed driving. Meaning did you have more trouble making turns at high speeds than you did before the JIC's?

Cheers! : My spring rates are 7kg/mm front and 5kg/mm. About 390ft/lb and 280ft/lb respectively. That's what the JIC catalog recommends and I felt that would be sufficient. The springs are purple. At least they were last time I washed the car ages ago (winter sucks). Just to clarify - this set is for a FC, not a FD.

They were bought in Japan. I went to a little hole-in-the-wall shop that offered them at sizable discounts. I just had to be over there long enough for them to be sent in from JIC directly. From there I sent them to my home using some cheap shipping.

I like the fact that I got them pretty cheaply. But I'd suggest to anybody else to get them from someplace that can help you when they need to be rebuilt. Whether that means that they'll do it (JIC authorized rebuilders) or that they'll refer you to someplace that does that work. Me? I'm on my own.

Well I had researched this before, but I thought the rates changed depend on application. Apparently that is not the case. So incase anyone cars the spring rates are 12 kg/mm / 9 kg/mm (front/rear). I read somewhere in the past that they were 10 kg / 8 kg, which I would think would be better (not as rough) but I could be wrong.

Just incase anyone cares you can convert kg/mm to lbs/in as follows:

1 mm = 0.03937 in
1 kgf = 2.20462 lbf (where kgf is kg force and lbf is lbs force)

So,
12 [kg/mm]*(2.20462 [lbf] / 1 [kg])*(1 [mm] / 0.03937 [in]) = 671.969 lb/in
or 12 [kg/mm] * 64 = 671.969 lb/in

Using this you can calculate the following:
[kg/mm] -> [lb/in]
12 -> 671.97
11 -> 615.97
10 -> 559.98
9 -> 503.98
8 -> 447.98
7 -> 391.98
6 -> 335.99

I just thought this might help out someone. And before you ask yes I am an engineer. Why else would I have given the answers to 3 significant figures in my original calculation.

All I do as a rule of thumb to make it easier.

I just take the number in kg/mm and multiply it by 56 and you're set. lol. It's exactly what Cody has indicated this just makes it easier.

7x56=392, etc.... You can plug in the units if needed, it's understood for me. lol.

Woops. Typo on my part. That should have been:

12 [kg/mm] * 56 = 671.969 lb/in

not

12 [kg/mm] * 64 = 671.969 lb/in

That was a mistake on my part. I'll try and edit that. All of the conversions were done correctly though. Just not that one simplification. You can check it against what Tein is quoting if you want:

http://www.tein.com/flexdamp.html

Hey Rishie. I didn't get an email back from you on Friday. Do you think you can get the JIC's sent out to me towards the end of the month? Thanks.

JIC's next shipment should arrive at the end of this month or first week of March as I was told by JIC.

Thanks, rishie

Anyone want to trade their purple springs for my black ones?

I have 10kg/8kg (550/450)on my SF1's. These spring rates are recomended by Tri-Point and M2. Personaly I think they are better for a R1 car and not the Touring edition. I would rather go with 8kg/6kg (450/350), so if anyone is ordering a new set I could have Zeil Motorsports swap them for us. ...assuming there is no problem with SF1 springs on FLT-A2's.
