How do wheel spacers affect a cars handling?

Anyone know?

I want to get fender flares for my 1st gen and get spacers for the front and rear to bring the wheels out more. How would it affect handling?

^That would be one thing, the track width will also affect handling, wider =better if both ends are the same. If one end is wider it will throw off the balance.

Ive never ran spacers on a performance vehicle.. but on my old 323 GTX I ran some huge 1 - 1/2" spacers all around (dont ask..). I didnt race it or drive aggressively, but even at higher speeds (highway driving) it was twitchy and just felt off balanced.

They also lengthen the lever arm that the shocks and springs work on, meaning the suspension is effectively softened.

EXACTLY what Black91n/a just said.

Other than lock to lock steering clearances, the spring rates should ideally change. Black is on the money. i've got some materials with the formulas so you can calculate what spring rates you might need vic. It's in lamen terms so even i should be able to do the math. hehe.
