Question Hawks HPS vs. EBC Greenstuff?

I want to upgrade the stock brake pads with Hawks HPS or EBC Greenstuff.
Which one produces the least dust?
Any of these squeal? that is a turn off.
Anyone had any problems with these?
Thanks in advance for your input.

They are both good pads. I would assume that the Hawk pads are more for racing. But then again Im not too familiar with Hawk pads. The EBC greenstuff is a good pad with little dust. A few friends of mine uses them one with an Rx-7 and one with a Supra. They say they like them a lot.

I've never used the Hawk pads, but I have used the EBC Green Stuff on my '89 T2. Around town, they don't really have much dust at all come off of them. Once the track it's a different story. Once they heat up, they wear out quickly. I saw maybe 200 miles on the track with them plus however many street miles. They are not joking when they say they are now a good track pad. They seemed fine up until the last 20 miles. They went from a lot of pad left to almost the pad backplates digging into the rotors (almost) in a VERY short period of time. When they go, they go. But I just love their initial bite (very grippy when cold or hot) and all around feel. I now use the Red Stuff up front with the Green Stuff in the back. I feel this makes for a good balance.

EBC Greens are probably lower dust, and don't squeal, so that sounds like the winner for your needs.

Don't use Red Stuffs. I melted a set of fronts in ONE DAY at Putnam Park...honestly!

HPS is probably your cheapest alternative. The HPSes are comparable to Green Stuffs. The best road/track pad is the Type RS/RZ pad made by Sumitomo. They'll fit US spec FD calipers. Check www.mazdaspeedmotorsports.com

I haven't tried the EBCs yet, but I just got a full set of HPS pads to replace a set of HP+. The HPS pads grip very well and feel linear. They are quiet so far although I have heard a hint of squeal under very light braking. They definitely do not grip as hard as the HP+ (although I haven't braked real hard on them yet), but are much quieter and have dusted MUCH, MUCH less.

I like them so far and the price can't be beat. Get them at www.tirerack.com or www.summitracing.com

The HPS pads are not near as bad as the HP+ pads about squealing or dusting. The HPS's are a good street pad with minimal dusting, and low squeal factor. As far as track duty, I don't think they'd cut it. I have heard the EBC Greens are not a good buy ... in fact, I have not heard many good things about any of the EBC products. I was running a Sumitomo pad (part number starts with JB ....) and it was a very good performer. Quiet, good braking on the street and auto-x, VERY minimal dusting. FYI.

Contrary to most of you, my experience with EBC greens was terrible. Yes, it grips well but it sure puts out lots of dust. I constantly had to clean my rims. Will not use them again.

Thumbs up

For exclusive street, and autocross, you can't beat EBC Greens, NO dust, great bite, NO fade ever(including track from 120-30 Repeatedly). They last less than an hour on the track(same for reds). For a dual purpose vehical, HP Plus are great, but they do dust, and they may squeal under light braking, and when extremely hot. I have used all of the above pads on both the track, and on the street. Btw, I have an extra set of HP Plus for sale, front and rear, 100.00 shipped. I use Carbotech XP Plus competition pads for the track, with EBC reds on the rear. Carl Byck

In my experience, no dust, no noise, good bite with EBC Green stuff:

The Green Stuff don't really make much dust around town or at autocross. But get them nice and hot like at a track day or driving hard through some twisties and they'll make dust like it's cool. How can a pad truly be dust free as they claim? That pad material has to go somewhere after all.

I've been running Hawk HP+ in front and HPS's in rear for about a year now, all street driving. The HP+'s dust something major! (The HPS's not as bad, but since they are in the rear, I wouldn't expect to see as much dust even if they did dust as bad as the HP+'s)

Some people have complained of the Hawks squeaking, but I never had a problem with them...I did perform the recommended breakin, that likely helped eliminate the squealing. I get an occational soft squeal under very light braking between 2 and 0 Mph's, ie slowly stopping for a light... I might still get that, but can not longer hear it over my exhaust...LOL

K

PS Pressing against Brembo slotted & dimped rotors the HP+ (f) and HPS (r) bite HARD, even cold, and VERY VERY HARD if I warm them up a bit...

I agree completely with Nocab ... I've been running the HP+ pads all around and love them. They bite hard whether they are cold or hot ... and have only experienced fade when I was bedding them in. That includes an all day track event.

Friend has the HPS ... and likes them. Hardly any dust at all and still has great stopping power.
