Grinding from front right Caliper, fixed it, but have ? about EBC Greenstuff Pads....

Hey guys,

Just got back from the Auto Hobby Shop. I had my car up on the lift, ripped of the rims, and checked out the calipers.

Sure enough, that grinding sound on tight turns was coming from the bolts that hold the caliper in place.

If any of you are wondering..the bottom caliper bolt should have two washers, a lock and a flat washer, and the top should have only one. The bottom bolt was grinded down quite a bit, but there was no damage to the rotor. I switched out the bolts, but had to re-thread the tip of the damaged one.

Voila! No more grinding on hard turns!!! Amazing what happens when you install things the right way.

Now..for the question...those of you with EBC Greenstuff pads...

When you first jump in the car....and go to stop, do you experience any grinding of any kind on long or sudden stops?

I'll come to a stop, and it'll grind for the entire time...worse grind as I apply pedal pressure. It only happens for the first few stops..and then after that it doesn't happen for the rest of the time driving.

Is this just the pads coming up to operating temp?

I'm not sure on the EBC Greens, but some scraping noise is not uncommon for some pads. I would be kind of surprised if it was severe with street pads like the Greens.

Did you replace your rotor? The bolt probably took a fair amount of material off the inner surface of the rotor. That will be bad for braking, and may be the cause of your current grinding noises. You might need a new rotor.

Nopes...

Checked it all out. The rotor apparently is stronger than the bolt, because there was no physical damage to the rotor itself.

Also..the portion of the rotor where the bolt touched it, does not ever touch the portion of the rotor where the brake pads make contact.

Not to mention, I replaced the rotors so they're brand new. Plus, it was only one bolt on the RIGHT side...not BOTH sides.

SO that can't be it. I guess when I'm getting my alignment done, I'll have Les Scwhab take a look.

I thought I did the bolt-swap-grind once and it hit the rotor on the inner swept area. It doesn't seem like any other part of the rotor would be close enough to the end of the bolt. Braking systems are pretty sensitive to any damage to the rotor surface, so it might be worth another look. The pad might not bed well and could end up running at a different temp than the outer pad which could lead to some strange behavior.

I have green stuff pads and they grind like a biotch. I though it was cause of my slotted rotors as it is more of a swish swish swish than a grrrrrrrrr....but the pads do glaze a bit in light traffic driving. If I scuff em up and stick to spirited driving they wont start the noise again until it rains and I get easy on the peddle....guess I'll live with it cause they are great pads....better stop grip and no dust.

Ahh...see..that's exactly what I'm talking about.

I had a professional mechanic that was at the shop today fixing his car take a quick look at my rotors, and he said they were fine, and that he couldn't see anything specifically wrong with them...plus I re-checked my installation against the shop manual, and everything is installed the way it should.

It's gotta be those EBC pads....

Anyone else have grinding?

Ya...it looks like that's the case. I took the caliper apart and rechecked everything. It's all good. It's definetly the pads when they're cold. They do work great though.
