FD Rice Mod of the Day ($10)

Alright, here is the rice mod of the day. Let me explain before I get flamed:

I have "17 OZ Racing rime that are my "good" rims. For street use. I bought a pair of stock FD rims to put some race rubber on. However, the guy who sold them to me had just put a brand new set of high performance tires on them. Since my "17's tires were worn dangerously, I put the stock rims on the car for a road trip to Miami (long story). I ended up staying in Miami for much longer than I had planned. Anyway, 15 year-old rims don't look so hot. So, I figured that since they were track rims anyway, what did I have to lose for messing them up.

So, a pack of 320 sandpaper and a $5 can of wheel paint in glorious break dust gray. It did not come out perfect, but I think it looks pretty good and much more aggressive than the chipped, faded silver.

No comments? I'm almost thinking that I like these now better than the 17s.

Not bad. A lot of the track guys painted their stock wheels either a dark gray or black.

I definitely wouldn't call it a "rice mod".

BTW, you can browse and see some of the other colors people used here:

I guess I classified it as a rice mod as it is the typical Honda/Autozone mod along with the compulsory primer and missing front bumper. Us FD guys are so used to throwing money at our cars that when you do something that costs $10 you feel riced out. Since I like the look, I might have them professionally redone since I don't think the spray can paint will look good for very long.

I do like the stock FD wheels for their lightness. You are hard pressed to find any wheels at that weight and size for any amount of money.

Well, 'rice' would mean that you would think the new paint on the rims made the car faster.

There are several rims, some affordable, which are similar in weight. Check out Rota Slipstreams which you can get in a 17x8.5 +48 fitment around the same weight. Also, SSR has a few offers which are very lightweight. The stock wheels are decent, however, compared to some of the new wheels today they are a little fragile. You'll find several threads of the RX7 wheels cracking (both revisions) under heavy use. I will be retiring my stock wheels once I burn off the rubber which is on them now.

However, you can get the stock wheels pretty cheap compared even to the "cheap" after market wheels. You can just stock up on stock wheels and if they break, simply change them out.

Thanks. I agree with you. I was happy with the outcome. I think it shaved about 5 years off the car's looks.

That is unless you want or need a big brake kit (which hardly any of them work with 16" wheels). IMO, the stock wheels are old fashioned. While they are adequate, nothing updates the look of the FD more than a decent set of wheels. And it is possible to have the updated look without sacrificing weight. However, you will sacrifice money.

I have a good set of stock rims, how much will you pay for them?

Where were you a month ago when I bought my current set?

I just got a set with brand new tires for $400. Without tires, I would pay a little less. I don't have the money for any more wheels right now, however, I have thought of buying two more to put some drag radials on for a track day. Let me see where I am after I do my taxes.

I agree, larger breaks won't work, but I'm pretty happy with my breaks. Also 16" tires are generally cheaper than 17" and have a nicer street feel but I have noticed them more squirrelly when pushed at a high-speed cornering limit--especially when I was not smooth.

That looks way better, they would look the best powdercoated black though I've seen a few and they look bad as%. I like them better than those 17's

I think it added 15-20 horses which is about a 30% improvement over stock and shaved 1.5 seconds off my quarter mile while improving my aerodynamics. The wing also added 40 horses by the way and another 10 for the turbo timer.

I gotta go change my blinker fluid bee4 the drift tonite.

I dont know if you have an air compressor, but they make small hand held sandblaster guns that have a hopper on them to hold sand. They are perfect for small jobs like this.
