Hey Howard, I noticed that the dust shields are gone on your rear brakes. I looked today and it appears that the factory shield is lightly pressed onto the upright, but the hole is too small to get around the hub.

How did you remove yours? Grinder?

I see a noticeable difference in the two. The one on the left is wider from the bolt heads to the bolt threads on the other side.

 

Just replaced my OEM fronts with the RB two piece fronts. Install was easy.

The EBC Reds with their stock backing/shim will not fit. But with it removed and using the Mazda SS backing/shim, it fit but a little tight. If you carefully remove the
EBC 'Breaking-In" coating, you still have to remove their backing but it will then fit easily with the Mazda one.

Tomorrow, I start on the rear kits.

18x9.5 +40 and 10.5 +30

We do have these wheels available for the Fender modding savy guys.

With wide fenders I would go with the +27 front and +30 rear with 265/35 and 295/30. That's a great setup as well with near stock tire diameters for the FD.

Can confirm the calipers bolt up to either bracket. Piston diameter on both is 30mm.

The clincher is the casting mark "1324".......which I didn't notice before. Doh.

 

when you install RB's setup all four OEM DUST SHIELDS NEED TO GO.

(a hacksaw and 15 minutes will do the job.)

the dust shields in theory guide air into center of the rotor. i say in theory because the space on the stock front rotor is less than 6.5 MM. the air-space on the RB front rotor is 18 MM! (think massive ventilation)



further, the OEM rotor air intake is masked by the section width of the tire/wheel. so all they really do is greatly decrease heat radiation from one side (the ONLY open side) of the rotor.

unlike OEM, RB rotors are free to intake cooling air from both sides. they can't do that if the dust shield is in place.

in addition they are ounces of unsprung weight.

grab the hacksaw, it is always good therapy to remove junk from the fd.

If you want to run nitrogen in your tires, you fill one stem with nitrogen while opening the other to release the air.

 

Would you verify this number, please? I've always seen 34.9mm, and that's a BIG difference.

just got off the phone with the Gurus at RB. I got an update that my stocking order for the

REAR OE Caliper kit in slotted only is on its way to me. I should have a handful of them available next week and will take photos to compliment hc's above.

I asked for update on the Front BBK and as you know we're waiting for Howard to get them in his hands and do a thumbs up so I'm getting an estimated lead time of end of June assuming that everything with RB and hc goes according to plan.

I can confirm that using the earlier caliper fits the later mounting bracket without issue.

I'm going to give a rear disc to a local engineering company, and see what they say about making a kit up for the rear.

Sounds like a front piston diameter, 30mm is correct unless my verniers are fubar.

 

Hmmm... Page P-4 in the FSM says 36.1mm front & 34.9mm rear. Those numbers are repeated on Ramy's page which includes RS/RZ specs as well. Now I feel dumb for never bothering to measure mine.

 

Are you measuring the part of the piston that touches the brake pad, or the diameter in the bore? I'm almost 99% sure that the rear piston diameter 34.9mm.

I took the plunge on tuesday and ordered the whole salami, open slot......my smoking brake pads/calipers at DGRR this year convinced me

 

That'll be a nice addition to a very nice FD. Good choice!

I have the new RB two piece stock replacement rotors for the FD fronts.
When making sharp turns, the outside wheel rotor slightly rubs on the inside bottom edge of the calipers. This is due to flex in the bearings and surronding components. My front hubs have less than 20,000 miles on them.

so would it be better to file those spots on the caliper down before installing the rotors?? I hope this doesn't happen with the BBK set up...

 

YES!
The clearance between the wider RB rotor and the caliper is about .018" on the corner where mine is rubbing. I ground down about .010" on the area where it rubbed.

Just came back from my mod test. The right side is now quiet but the left is still rubbing, but a lot less than before.

You could maybe make another shim to use along with the one Mazda has on the caliber mounting flanges.


I have the rear BBK kit and it is perfect.
My kit arrived Wednesday evening and I installed it yesterday. Doing my brake-in driving and testing to day when this minor problem occurred.

I'd defer to the FSM, my measurements were to the hard chromed surface where it meets the dust seal. Been a while since I've kitted the rears, but sounds like there is a step under the seal. Looks like I have my weekend assignment....

Surprised there is stated to be a difference between the Spirit R and RS/RZ rotor diameters - unless it amounts to a mill or two - a friend mounted a set using the RZ package with no issues other than catastrophic rotor failure in use! It should be still hanging on the wall of shame, so will have to get the measuring stick out.

I ordered the RB ET700 front and rear, I decided a slight compromise on the street is better than having to change pads for the track and have two sets.
