Question FD - can you run 275/45 -16

It is time for a set of tires, and I am looking at my options. I Autocross the car in ASP.

The CCW's in 18x10 with Hoosier 285x35-18's are around 3K

Circle Racing Wheel, makes a nice custom 17 or 18" road racing wheel, but they are about $500 more than the CCW's for a set of 4.

Diamond Racing, a local place in Milwaukee, makes steel wheels, they arent pretty but they are cheap. They can only make their race wheel in a 16" diameter...

So they would make a 16x10 for me, and cut it down to whatever fits, custom offset for something like 650 for a set of 4, add 850 or so for thoosiers, and I would stand to save about 1500

Could I get them cut to someting like 16x9.5 with a 45mm offset and run 275/45 16's on all four corners. I do have M2 style toe links in the reat and 2.5" coil-overs, but the stock trailing arms.

Thanks
Dan

OK, so I noticed that you can run this tire on a 9" rim which would save me about $120 off of the Diamond Racing Option. The question here, is what offset. The 275 tire is actually going to be slightly larger than stock. I could always buy some diff gears if I care...

With a 16-inch wheel diameter, you run into a problem (literally) with the rear trailing arms. This is why 17 or 18-inch rims are preferable in the back for clearing the rear trailing arms.

How much do the steels weigh? Will this really be better than your stockers?

21 lbs.. they look kile powder coated oem (i.e. hubcap type rims). The idea is to run 275/45... Think I could get away with this on stock rims?

I don't know about rubbing issues, but you should run 275/40 R16, not 275/45. This will be very close to stock tire+wheel diameter. I would listen to SleepR1 though, he does a lot of racing and knows what he's talking about.

Hoosier doesn't have a 275/40, but the tire will be shorter than a street 275/45 due to the small ammout of tread.
