FC Coilover options

This isn't your typically coilover question I don't think so don't flame me, I'm asking this because I'm cheap/poor and like the best bang for the buck.

I'm curious to know if you can use sleeves (Ground Control type set ups) from other cars on an FC? Basically if any of the other sleeves will fit FC struts, I imagine the top mounts aren't too interchangeable.

I ask because you can get cheap coil over parts on other clubs because they're plentiful, I'll obviously buy the correct springs, i just think I can get sleeves for cheap from somewhere else if there is a common sleeve. I don't track my car enough to need a full coilover/damper combo, I just do some light drift/autocross stuff so i think that just a sleeve and decent damper will get the job done.

Anyway if anybody has any info on this I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Sam

Don't think like that. Suspension is a neccessity. Just spend the coin on good coils, and you won't have to worry about anything for a good while. I'd suggest grabbing some STANCE GR-S (IIRC)

You will thank yourself later on, especially if you plan on doing AutoX, and daily driving your car?

- Don't be cheap. If you cant afford it, save for it.

Many an entry level auto-xer gets by on Konis and GC sleeves. You can probably adapt any of the threaded lower seats (assuming they are for 2.5" springs) to work with our dampers, but you will probably need to modify or build your own upper hats depending upon the size of the strut on the car that it came from.

APEXi N1 Damper
Endless Zeal Line
GAB Sports
Moton 2 way race
Moton 3 way race
Moton 4 way race
Penske 2 or 3 way shocks.
KW Variant 3s, or 2 or 3 way competition shocks.
Stance GR+
Powered by MAX.
Ohlins.
Aragosta
Tein Flex and up.

There are tons of options for the FC. From $1300 Stance GR+s to $11,000 Moton 4 way Racecar shocks. Depends on what you want to do with the car, and how much exactly you want to spend.

The Stance GR+s will do for going low, street driving, drifting, and offering good support here in the states for servicing coilovers. They are also a well made Coilover. Powered by MAX in San Diego also makes nice coilovers for street/drift/mild track use in the 1200 dollars range. They are a japanese company, but the actual coilovers are made in Taiwan.

If you want to be serious about full control, feedback and really want to race on tracks/do time attacks, the stance, and the cheaper stuff does not really offer the performance needed. Something like N1 Dampers, Endless Zeals or KW Variant 3s would be good in this bracket ($2000-3000 dollars) with custom spring rates and such.

I believe HKS, Mazdaspeed, and RE-Amemiya make coilovers too.

HKS ones for the FC are discontinued as far as i know.

At least the new Hipermax IIIs (only available for the FD).

RE-Amemiya uses Quantum suspension.

And JIC makes coilovers too.

Supposidly there's word that HKS is making a new set of coilovers for the FC, they're supposed to be 'cheaper' then their old Hipermax setup, but knowing HKS they'll make something better and more expensive. I'm waiting to get some adjustment wrenches for my Hipermax II Coilovers, and then I'll be able to put them on. Picked them up for 600 shipped with only 6k on them. You can find good used sets just be safe and make sure you can get all the parts you need for them if anything goes wrong.

You can use threaded sleeves on whatever you can fit inside them. Most are just over 2" ID so they fit nicely over 2" tube. You can buy some Tokicos and cut the stock type perch off of them and slide a threaded sleeve over them. You will have to take up some space inside the sleeve because most street type struts aren't that big(2"). Just be sure the place the sleeve sits is level so the load is spread around.

One thing to look out for is that street type struts can't handle a stiff spring. The valve inside them is pretty small and they can't control the rebound of say a 500lb spring.

The top perch can be pretty easily done if you are using the stock top bearings. You just need to be sure the spring load is going through the center around the strut hole and not hitting anything when the strut pivots when you turn.
