Heat capacity. Sometimes allows for a larger pad size to be used as well. The negative is unsprung weight.

 

I 2nd that. The larger the brake disc, the better it's ability to dissipate the heat from stopping the car.

 

Larger brake rotors also gives a larger moment arm so that you get more braking force for a given friction force. This helps keep the heat generated down, or it helps develop a greater breaking foce.

There's also the negative of larger rotating mass, as that's inertia that must be accelerated along with the car, so it makes the car slightly slower to accelerate.

 

dont be fooled by bigger brakes yes i agree with every word that was just said BUT bigger brakes will only stop you better if you bias them correctly (more force upfront to keep the brakes working efficiently and evenly when the weight shifts forward) and most companys dont spend the time or money to develop this kind of setup and unless you buy a brake bias controller those brakes will lower your braking distance, they just wont fade with abuse.

 

That's true. Also, bigger brakes won't help you stop faster if you can already lock up your tires with the stock brakes.

To answer "Why is a larger brake disc better ???" you must realize that larger is NOT better unless you're already overheating the current brakes.
