Decisions(brakes)

Well, awhile(prolly a month) ago I was checking all my brake rotors(GSL) and pads, etc. Well, I found a small crack on the front driverside disc rotor. So, I bought some brake parts, all four rotors, and some genuine mazda bearings from a guy on here. Great price, great guy..thank you Jarath. They are oem rotors I bought and he threw in the bearings for the font rotors(inner and outer). So, I know its dangerous to be driving with a partially cracked rotor. Should I change out the front rotors, bearings, pads and leave the rear, or do them at the same time? I got hawk hps brake pads the other day from mazdatrix. The fronts only. What should I do? Oh ya, all brake pads seem to have plenty of pad material left.

Change front and rear at different times. Most braking is done with the front and it wears out faster. Putting good pads in the front is a smart thing to do.

Yeah, I knew that the front does 60 - 70% of the braking. So, Is there a reason for doing them at different times? Maybe I'll do the fronts this saturday and the rears next saturday.

Most of the time you will go through front pads well before you do the rears. I end up usually changing out the fronts at least once before doing the rears on almost any car I've ever owned with full disk. Usually bigger the vehicle (truck in my case) the worse it is. Also, those rotors need the bearing recesses installed so you have to do your front bearings at the same time.

Should I have my brake rotors turned?? They are new, but were sitting and got some nicks on the outer edge of the rotor. Nothing bad though.

Getting rotors turned usually costs less than new rotors off rockauto, unless u know someone. If the deformation is on the face of the rotor where the pad contacts it, don't seat your new HPSs on the damaged surface.

You want to turn that one rotor. That others are fine. The knick may be sanded off but it isn't worth doing... just tell the guy when you do it to just turn it enough to level off the one knick as they will sometimes take a lot more off than they need to. The outer edge doesn't contact anything so that won't matter and will usually rust You could get away without turning them but it's going to wear your pads a little faster and for a minor turn I would just do it right the first time... plus its only like $10 to turn one.

Don't turn the other rotors... they are new and is a waste of good rotor.
