Clicking rear brakes

Guys what is it that causes and what can I do to fix a clicking noise I get from the rear brakes. I have two 3rd gens and they both do the same thing. It sounds like the pad is clicking on the rotor, that is just a guess. When I touch the brake pedal and just engage the brakes it stops. You only hear the noise when you are going slow. When you speed up at some point the clicking stops. However again when you slow down to a point it will start. Then just apply a little pressure to the brakes and it stops. So what is it that causes it and what can I do to fix it. Again same problem on two different cars. It buggs the crap out of me.

if you install pads without using the shims that hold them in place, they will jostle against the caliper and rotor as you drive around. as soon as you touch the brakes the pistons will lock them into place against the rotor, which stops them from making any noise.

what to do? jack up the car and take a look at your pads. make sure they aren't too thin. install some fresh shims, etc.
