Bushings Help
Bushings Help
I watched this a few months ago while replacing bushings and bolts. I came by this again today. It has some useful info on the video. I am sure some might disagree with some stuff.
What is a question for me is the section on bolts. I trusted the old Mazda engineers assesment on bolt length, as many of us do. That length with no threads is way shorter than the new engineering would suggest. I will continue to trust old specs, however has anyone tracking their cars ever had trouble with breaking bolts? Specifically in the suspension using shorter bolts. I was just a bit curious. Thank in advance.
Also, when I replaced bolts with JIS, I didn't seem to have a choice to pick the non- threaded section length. There were a couple online retailers that did. No JIS versions did this though.

the miata people have troubles with the alignment bolts coming loose when you have sticky tires on the car, and i've seen it on the FC too. FD has the bolts too, but i haven't seen one at the track in a really long time
Mazda's fix was to supersede to a new bolt with a finer thread pitch.
Mazda also wants you to toque the suspension bolts to the higher end of the spec, its in the competition prep manual.

Thank you for the information. I might down the road set the car up with competition bushings where applicable. I have an extra sub-frame and will maybe install some better links too.
I haven't torqued my bolts yet, just hand tightened. I put some anti-seize on the bolts as some of my old ones needed cut off with a sawsall and/or a cutoff wheel. I noticed with the anti-seize the torque spec changes, that was news to me. If you were to use less thean grade 8 or JIS, the torque spec would be higher than the max for the nut and bolt.
