Question Brake upgrade ?

hia

I m interested with any experience in your brake upgrade, regarding brand, kind of kit (competition or fast road) and price ? (mostly for front brakes)

When I talk about brake upgrade I think disk diameter upgrade with or without caliper upgrade.

I searched around but haven't really found anything ..

thanks !

You guys need to learn how to do a search, instead of posting questions that have answered repeatedly!

Here's cross-drilled rotor vs. dimpled rotor thread:

Well I try to help you all out as the suspension/wheel/tire/brakes moderator...it just gets frustrating when forum members don't do a thorough search BEFORE posting a new topic...

Yes I ve read these treads, but the 99 spec typeR brake are 12.4inch diameter, isn't it the stock size ? what the upgrade so ? I saw the rotor seems bigger but is it enought to lower temperature ?

I thought about 13 to 14 inch disks.

I also saw somewhere a guy who fitted 13inchs disk with stock calipers (with a mod).

Let me know how your brakes did on track

You didn't read the threads very thoroughly then...

The stock US spec FD front rotors are 11.6 inches and 0.8-inches thick.

your right =)

since english is not my natural language when a thread seems 'out of topic' I didn't read it entirely =)
I'll read it a bit more.

on mazda.co.jp I this page about RX7
http://www.rx-7.mazda.co.jp/brake.html
there is a cooling system on the brakes, is it these brakes youre talking about ? do you have the venting system too ?

The '99 front dust shields are shaped like large air scoops to draw fresh air to the front brake rotors.

My '99 Type RS brakes don't have the holes in the rotors, and my calipers are painted silver...

Other than those two details, the "Spirit" brakes pretty much the same as the '99 Type RS brakes...

I didn't know the FD Rx7 had a following in France...I figured you all drive Renaults and Peugots shod with Michelin tire, and that's pretty much it

Smile hehe,

It's not wrong there is a wide majority of renault/peugeot/citroen out there, and Japanese cars are controled by quotas ...
Mazda France have imported like 15 RX7 in 93, so they are pretty confidents (like the supras, only 15), but others country in europe have much more RX7, like germany.

I don't own mine yet :/, But I can't wait to get it.

I ll use it for track event, that's why I look about brake upgrades, the 99 spec look nice for the price.

I also read that you use your FD on track, and with 17" wheels, can you tell me more about this choice ? why not 18" ? at start I planned to use 18" 285 and 255 tires, but the rims are pretty expensives and heavy.

I use 17s because they're less money for both tires and wheels, and the 17-inch wheels are lighter (usually).

My SSR Comps in 8.5 x 17, 42-mm offset are 15 lbs; and the 9.5 x 17, 42-mm offset are 16 lbs...Most 18s will weigh between 18 and 20 lbs for the same widths...

The Hoosier R3S03 DOT slicks are also the lightest and stickiest tires available short of true racing slick from Pirelli or Michelin... I run 245/45-17 on the 8.5 x 17; and 275/40-17 on the 9.5 x 17...the 245 weighs 20 lbs, and the 275 weighs 21 lbs...combined wheel/tire weight is between 35 and 36 lbs each corner...

Max Cooper runs 285/30-18s with 10 x 18s all the way around with BFG R1As. Total weight of his package is 45 lbs each corner, so at least 10 lbs more per corner than my setup...Note that Max does have an edge in contact patch, and his car makes a TON of horsepower, while my FD's HP output is "fairly" stock compared to Max's single turbo beast!

Driving on track with 18s is also a bit dicey, as they're less forgiving than 16s or 17s...

mmm

In fact I plan to push it to ~350hp with a serious (read reliable) engine upgrade, but like 1 year after I get it.

But for the start I would prefer learning the car and his setup with the stock HP.
I plan for start : Tein HA, big break upgrade, rims&tires and struts bars.

Would be preferable to go 17" with better tires like yoko A032R or A038R ... (?) the only point is it's realy difficult to find 17" rims wider than 8"

Oh, you'll need to buy wider wheels from overseas...the stock wheels are 8-inches wide, so you might as well run the stockers with 245/45-16s...

As for tires you could probably get Pirelli P-Zero Corsas and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Competition tires...either would be MUCH better than the the Yokohama A032/A038 R series...

Hmmm... I've had good luck with ultra high performance cheap tires like Bridgestone RE71 or Yokohama AVS Intermediates...that way you won't feel bad burning through so many tires between road and track events...

If the RS brakes aren't enough for you, you may want to contact www.n-tech.net as they have an AP Racing kit which I purchased about 4 weeks ago. I installed the kit (13" front rotors) with the larger Mazda 929 master cylinder and brake feel/modulation/outright power is just incredible. N-Tech is also in the process of desining a rear kit using either the RS rear brake calipers or the Wilwood superlite (no parking brake with that one) and using plated/coated and slotted RS-sized calipers in the rear. The regular RS rotors are uncoated and are not slotted. Perhaps (although I do not know) the upgraded rear rotors he is offering are of a better grade iron as well. You can email him at nick@ntechengineering.com

I'll be judging the RS brakes at a track event next weekend...I'm betting they'll more than ample to get the job done time and time again...

BTW, if you drive the car daily the parking brake is a must, and worth having with the stock RS setup...

I'll agree with Sleep's statement regarding the parking brake...I'm still trying to figure out some way to use the Wilwoods and integrate some sort of a parking brake! :-) Otherwise, it's the "plain jane" RS rears, LOL.

A little high-temp silver paint goes a long way in providing "some" aesthetic appeal to the stock Japan Rx7 RS brakes...
