Question 2nd GEN suspension upgrade/wheels

OK, basic question, I have a nice 86 Sport with 108k miles.

I want to upgrade the suspension and replace the tired shocks and springs.

My plan is to get the RACING BEAT suspension package, and add TOKIKO non adjustable shocks, and a front strut brace (also from RBeat).

Anybody who has done this to a secondgen have a better suggestion??

Also, I want to go to 16x7 or 17x7 wheels. Any vendors or products I should stay away from?

THANKS!

I have a 86 Sport also. Might as well add a rear strut brace. It makes a big difference in hard cornering.
I need new tires also. Was thinking of installing my 3rd gen wheels on her.

You'll be happy with that setup. I had that setup. But on another note, you could probably get KYB AGX's for about the same price. Those are adjustable and are known to dyno better than the Tokiko Illuminas even.

So I would suggest the AGX's, RB springs, and a Rear STB as opposed to the front one. THere's quite a few nice ones from Japan. not too bad either. Around $130.00 or so.

With regards to wheels, the FD wheels are great but will require the purchase of spacers. At that point it might not be a worthwhile expense. Are you looking for nice looking wheels or just functional ones. If function and cheap, I would by the Series V turbo II wheels. They are lightweight and hubcentric.

We should be able to help you with the mods you're interested in. Take your time deciding on wheels, that's for sure.

Question thanks, and also...

For the wheels, I would like well made wheels, and am thinking of buying 2nd gen 7x16 Mazda Turbo wheels from a junk yard, but they may be too pricy. I like the ones on the red second gen in the upper right hand corner of the site home page, as the "featured car".

I can't see how the 3rd gen wheels would work at all, I thought the offset would be screwed up even with spacers, plus, the FD wheels must cost a fortune.

I had not heard of the rear strut brace. Interesting. Back to the RB catalog. Best prices direct from RB, or elsewhere?

I was interested in a front strut brace because the wheel oscillates in hard cornering, likethe struts are moving or the power steering boost is going on and off- it is weird. Really pronounced in very hard turns, the steering wheel literally moves back and forth. I figure it is the struts/shocks, and the need for the strut brace.

I was on the US1 in CA., northern CA, amazing driving road, and the steering wheel oscillation was ridiculous, in only very tight fast cornering. I wonder if the computer is fooled that controls the power steering on and off boost??

Any of you guys ever replace the rear 'self steering" feature ///part with the racing beat piece that takes that feature away? I have heard it makes the car more predictable.

Thanks for your ideas everyone!

I'd highly recommend replacing your suspension bushings before doing anything fuirther. As well as checking wheel/tire balancing along with alignment.

Make sure you get the mesh T2 wheels, not the brick 20lb ones. FD wheels will work. What's expensive?

Depending on the part, we may be able to offer you better pricing than RB direct. We're on their website as an authorized dealer.

We have STB for the rear in stock. I'll take a pic of mine tommorrow. Mine is Carbon Fiber though. You shouldn't need the STB to cure the problem you're having. Sounds like worn bushings to me.

NW86sport - Come on over to the NW Section and say hello.

Just a heads up that this coming Saturday there's going to be a large gathering of various local clubs at the Krispy Kreme in Issaquah. Please come out if you can. If you come out, look for the owner of the black Turbo2 with the smoodged up driver side door. That's mine.
