11 inch wide rear wheels on FD

I have searched and i cant find the answer i need. I hope some one can help me out. I want to run 11 inch wheels in the rear of my fd. I know that i will need to roll the fenders or even have a slight flare but I dont want to have a wide body kit. I want to know what back space will i need using an 11 inch wide wheel. I like how the rear fender looks on this car

11" with an offset of 38 is where I would start. This will push the wheel in basically as far as you can without rubbing. (tire choice and rim diameter will make a little difference here) The outside edge will be a different story, that is going to be tough to fit.

I suppose it depends if your after a look or truly wide rubber, with some 255 on the 11" rim it might work just fine, but put on a 305 and its going to be work to make it not rub.

Gene Felber ran an 18x11", +48, with 295/30/18. It required upgrade trailing arms, 2.5" coilovers, and trimming the fender lips OFF, and healthy camber.

Did gene need to massage the front inner wheel well at all?

I run 275 on a 10" offset 52 and I have rubbing issues on both the factory trailing arm and inner wheel well (JUST rubbing both)

+38 puts the tire way too far outbound. +50 or a backspacing of 7.5 is what you want. I've ran CCW classics 18x10 configuration with 275, 285, and 295 for quite some time without any type of rubbing issue. They have a backspacing of 7.5. Dan(Chadwick) and Kevin Doe have been running 315's in the rear on an 11in rear with the mods that Pete mentioned. I'm pretty sure both documented the mods on one of the 7 forums.

I should clarify the front inner of the REAR wheel well is what rubs, basically the body work directly above the trailing arm. Fronts I run the same wheel/tire with no real issues.

I would have thought going to a ~50 offset on anything wider than 10" would cause problems on the inside at least not without work, increasing width and keeping the same offset moves the rim outward in both directions. Im close to rubbing my coilovers with my wheel lip, the tire makes contact in 2 spots (trailing arm and bodywork). Granted an aftermarket trailing arm is a simple fix, as is a 5lbs sledge. I also am running 17" and an 18" wheel would give a few more mm clearance from the coilover at least, maybe help the tire rubbing as well (less deflection on a 285/30 than a 275/40), I have plenty of clearance in static positions, its only when the tire is loaded that it rubs.

Didn't Kevin Doe need to relocate the pickup points for his trailing arms and shock body, sending them both inbound by a few mm?

I have ordered trailing arms and 2.5" coilovers and I should get them next week. I will also roll/flare the fenders. I be ordering a set of Fikse Profil 5S as soon as i figure out what offset i need for the 11" wide wheels. Thats my plan anyways

I am running 19x11 Work Meisters with 315/25/19 Toyo T1R tires but I had to cut the entire lip off the rear fender.

with Feed Fenders you can do 12" wide wheels, but you'll need to do some measuring

wow, is their a build thread somewhere for that yellow FD?

he molded in the rear fenders to the body and rear bumper... looks great with no seems, but i imagine thats a lot of work to fix if either fender ever gets damaged.

^ I'd never mold the rear bumper to the rear quarter panels. Thats just plain stupid... Well unless you just plan on having a car that sits around and don't plan on driving it. If you plan on driving the car i'd suggest against it. I still don't understand people who buy sports cars to look at them.. I baught my fd to drive it in sport. It's a dual purpose car... street and track..

You could fit 11's in the rear no problem. . .just a matter of finding the proper offsets. . .

how wide of a tire do you want to run? Square tire or stretched?

12.5 rear. . .stock fenders with a minor roll. . .

so im guessing id have no problems running .. say a 20 inch wheel at 8.5 inches wide with either 25 or 35 offset ? or because of the larger wheel diameter itd be more difficult?

20" wheels are just plan STUPID on an FD. 19's are almost too big.

Guys,

I'm frequently asked about the 11" fitment on the rears and wanted to make a coule of points:

1. I selected the 11" width specifically to run the older Hoosier 305-30-18s on the track. You see, the 305s offered nearly an inch of tread (okay, 0.9") width over the 285-30-18s. Too bad they're no londer available in the dry config. The intent was to use the Kinesis wheels on the track with the Hoosiers, but I sold the car prior to burning up my last set of 285-30-18s and trying this. The next step up would be a 315, but these would not fit on my prior setup due to their section width and height. The only reason I ran the 295 P-Zeros on the street was to tweak the setup as these had very wide tread width that was nearly the same as the 305 Hoosiers (and larger width than that specificed by Pirelli). IMO, there really is no point in using 295 tires on an 11" wheel for the street in an FD. That is, a 10" or 10.5" would be fine and wouldn't be a PITA to install.

2. I would not recommend this modification- particularly for the street. This required removing the fender lips, hammering the metal fender liners upward (thereby slightly flaring the rear fenders), tubular trailing arms with max offset using washers, and an agressive negative camber. The latter would trash street tires fairly quickly and is subject to tramlining, i.,e., finding every little groove in the road and pulling the car in the grooves. Further, a few mm variance either way and these would rub either the fenders or the liners. After all of that, you might was well have the fenders professionaly rolled/flared. One would be better off rolling and flaring the fenders for use with 315s.

Hope that helps.

Gene

18x9.5 +10 and 18x11 +8 wheels on a fd rx7

This is very aggressive but I have yet to see one with this low offset, is it even possible and if so what is needed to fit this other than fender rolling, maybe pulling the rear fenders
