Really depends on what you are looking for and what you want to do....
Housing up here gets into the $85-120 per square foot. Cheaper can be had but rare. Mobile homes are available in the area too if that's your thing. Home prices are going up quite a bit due to Exxon, Anadarco, Shell, etc moving in or expanding and bringing a bunch of people to the area.
Really depends on your area. Each pocket of Houston varies dramatically in terms of crime, housing costs, etc. Car scene is good and varied. It's a very big, very metropolitan (and very humid) city!
East side of the city is mostly industrial/chemical, most pollution. Older area.
North side older with mixed residential and industrial.
West and south sides are more residential.
This is from the center to partially out to beltway 8 from the 610 loop.
Inside 610 on the west 1/2 is nice but expensive.
Further out the north to west to southwest are the newer modern areas.
This includes the Woodlands, Katy, and First Colony areas.
Contact me when you get here as I am retired and could show you some of the city.

^^^ Chuck is old and will just wanna take you to Bingo games or somethin. He lives in the Hood anyway.
Living IN Houston pretty much sucks *****. Personally, I prefer the classier Alvin area just South of Houston. Some of the houses don't even have wheels on them!

I recommend my area west/ north west near i10 and beltway 8..
Good school districts, close to generally everywhere you want to go in houston .
No shortage of nice neiborhoods, jobs, restaurants , hospitals and so forth.
Homes are on the mid-high price range but worth it for the area and convenience .

I live in one of the best areas due to modern growth, and access to most of the major roads.
Meadows Place:
(1) just south of beltway 8 at the SW corner where it goes north and east
(2) just west of 59 south
(3) just north of HW 90
(4) within a couple miles of Scott's (7dust) current or is it ex girlfriend.

If you don't want your kids to end up dead, in prison, or drug addicted, OR pay for private schooling you'll end up in a more expensive suburb.
Woodlands, katy, parts of Sugarland, parts of clear Lake, friendswood, Bellaire, and of course the exclusive Alvin Texas.
There are other good areas, but there are more bad ones.
And in terms of military friendly there's a huge VA hospital in the medical center, and extra wide parking spots all over the city.

I have to ask, Why Houston from so-cal? And why would you want the headache of a rotary shop? You know us Mazda guys are extremely cheap and like to blame the builders/shops when something goes wrong.
H town
Yes the city is military friendly majority wise. I know this well due to my job along with the school districts. Housing is up to you. Houston is checkered but I'd recommend northern houston. Feel free to hit me up if u need help.
Houston sucks *****! j/k, I hear Katy is nice and close to everything.
