Future 'South of Houston' Resident
Hey everyone! My name is Ela and I currently live in Florida but just got accepted for grad school at UTMB in Galveston: ) so come late July/ early August I should be moving down to that area! I've had a really good experience here in Gainesville, FL and was wondering how the car scene and more specifically the RX7 community is in the Houston area. Either way I look forward to meeting some of you guys!!

Also I could totally use some help and suggestions on housing locations. I need to be someone close to Galveston but also need a property with some land tohold all my toys that doesn't flood. Any suggestions??

If you plan to live on Galveston Island or near Galveston but on the mainland, then you should assume your property will get flooded by the storm surge if we are hit by a CAT 3 or higher storm. Here is a link to a map that shows what I mean:
http://images.bimedia.net/documents/...rmsurgemap.pdf
If you are lookin for property and want to be outside the initia storm surge, I've seen houses with property in Sante Fe, La Marque, Alvin, and League City. Also, make sure you purchase Flood Insurance.

Ya I've kind of been looking anywhere from south Houston to Galveston but not actually on the island. I have quite a few cars and would really not like them to flood out. Its so hard to look for places when you're 1, 400 miles away.

I live in Texas City but it's right on the north west corner by i45 (about 15 minutes from utmb)
You're welcome to come over and check it out if you want.
It really doesn't floood that often.

As far as drifting goes, there is a decent drift scene here in Houston but not amongst the 7 crowd...
If I were you i would want to be on the island because during rush hour the causeway will back up and slow down.
I commuted to school for 5 years and it sucked.
Also " ground zero" for our lemons team is about 30 minutes from the island so your in good company.

You saying "that often" worries me, I don't want it to flood... ever. I won't mind the commute just becuase I really don't want to live on the island for diffrenet reasons but I'm really excited to meet all the 7 folks out there!
I should be making a trip in May to start house hunting so maybe a good tour guide would be nice :P

I'm originally from South Florida where rush hour doesn't stop plus I always work on a weird schedule that usually doesn't match the peak traffic jams. Is it also safe to say the more south you go the less traffic?

Houston can be very accessible or absolutely awful depending on your commute. I think you are going to just have to come in and look around and drive the morning / evening commute to test it out.

You'll enjoy the RX crowd here in Houston. We have our own re-growing forum (rxclubofhouston.com) and our meets are put together very well by forum member/mod Dr. Killjoy.
Theres Houston Motorsports Ranch south of Houston if your into karting and roadcourse racing. Theres Royal Purple Raceway (1/4 mile) east of Houston and Motorsports Park (1/8 mile) (inside Houston on the northside). There is autox at the local dog track. Cars and Coffee is one of the best in the nation (north Houston). We get Import Faceoff (Drag/Show/Dyno) at Royal Purple Raceway twice a year. If youre into the "underground" scene...you better bring your big boy pants...as there are some serious heavy hitters on the streets...1500hp vetts, lambos, vipers etc.
As far as traffic is concerned, depending on your commute direction, and time you go in and get out, you could be stuck in traffic for an hour or have zero traffic (like me...12 min commute...15 miles).
As far as neighborhoods...I agree with 7dust, Alvin is nice...I spent many summers down there...very open, plenty of space for lawn decorations (RX-7's), low crime, very "country" in some parts. But there are many many great places to live here.
On the other hand, there are many places to steer away from...lol. 3rd ward...lol. 5th ward...Acres Homes...South Park...etc etc etc.

Hahah looks like it! So many options don't know what I should get into (or do a little bit of them all ) right now I'm doing the drifting thing but want to expand a bit. Either way sounds like it'll be super busy.
As for living I'm focusing mostly on the La Marque/Texas City area but we'll see what the housing market dictates. Ill be visiting in mid May to see what my options are. I do appreciate all the inside info, you guys have been a great help.

Hey from Texas City!! So I'm here for the week looking for houses and kind of wanted to go to a local car meet. What night do you guys usually meet (don't necessarily have to be a RX-7 meet) and where?
#18
As a club we meet on second Tuesday of each month. Coffee and cars is first Saturday so not far off of you will still be around. For random import meets all around town head on over to Houstonimports.Com but you'll have to be ready to steer clear of your standard posers.
