Emissions laws in texas.
Hey there im looking into moving to Texas and was wondering what are emissions laws/ requirements are for vehicles. I currently live in Ohio . I have a '82 that doesnt need emissions checks due to its age. and I have a 91 that i can get collector plates for so i dont need emissions checks on that here either. I was just wondering so i know in advance what to expect. Thank you for you time.
Only certain counties in Texas do emissions testing but when I checked the link below the list grew signifigantly since I checked last! Good news for you is that an 82 is exempt no matter which county.
Edit* I just noticed the 91 - if you move to one of the emmissions counties and wont pass a emissions test then you may have problems! How/What 91 model car is a collector vehicle?? There are waivers you can get but I never messed with it on my 85 - instead Im fixing it up (and driving it after dark for "test drives"!!!)
Where are you thinking of moving to? Ive lived all over texas and Austin is the only place I liked..

Bah i was misinformed on the year, i called and my car need s to be a year or 2 older to qaulify... or have 5 grand in work reciepts and pictures in Ohio... I plan on moving to the Fort Worth area. How stringent are the Emissions laws in texas. Is it easy to get a rotary to pass? The 91 still has all of its emissions equipment in tact.
They run two speeds on a dyno. 15mph in 2nd and 25mph in third. The problem is that this loads the engine more than real life driving does.
I have a mild port FD with a GT35R that passes with a high flow cat and the stock air pump. But I load my pass emmission test map into my PFC to do it after replacing my MP with the cat.
You will be near Gotham Racing and Steve Kahn can help you out with tuning.

I just found this on the website linked to above: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/Misc...sp#low_mileage
It says :
So if I'm reading this right, then if you drive the car less than 5,000 miles and at least attempted to repair something then you can get exempted. That would be great for people who can't get it to pass even with a cat.
As for emissions, as stated in the link it only applies to Austin area, Houston area, DFW area, and El Paso. Different areas have different testing types. Houston and DFW are more strict than Austin and El Paso. The car has to be 25 years old to be exempt, so I just have a little over 2 years until mine is exempt. Not that it matters, though, since I don't live in a emissions testing area.
It says :
Low Mileage Waiver
There is a low mileage exemption for motorists who drive less than 5000 miles/year. To qualify for this exemption you must:
1. Fail both the initial test and free retest
2. Incur $100 of emissions related repairs
3. Drive less than 5,000 miles/year
If you meet these qualifications then you would qualify for the low mileage waiver. Contact the DPS challenge station in your area for more information on the forms to complete.
