(Austin)Looking to borrow/buy pilot bearing puller

I need to borow or possibly buy a mazda pilot bearing puller so I can finish my repu clutch job. I got a harbor frieght bearing puller and thought I could get away with grinding it to fit but screw that!! Ive already spent more time than its worth and I dont want to F anything up (testing on scrap ecc. shaft). So if anyone reasonably close to South Austin has one they could loan me for a few days I'd appreciate it. I may just suck it up and order one but I sure could spend that 150$ elsewhere!

thanks -Erik

I don't have one, but offer some advice.

Get a wooden dowel rod that is the same size as the pilot bearing on the inside. Pack the pilot bearing with grease until it will not hold anymore. Then insert the dowel rod into the hole and center it inside the pilot bearing, then hit is as hard as you can with a hammer.

The above will work like a hydraulic press and force the bearing to move out, you may have to do the packing then hammering 2-3 times to get it all the way.

I love the way they use a dent puller for everything.

I tried the dowel but it was just a bit too small so it just shot the grease out. I was thinking about wrapping it with tape but got pulled away. I stopped by autosone and borrowed their blind hole puller today which looks like it should do the job nicely... thanks to all

got it out!

First I tried modifying this harbor freight pulller....

Then I rented this from autozone...

and finally a trusting member loaned me this. 3 minutes later the bearing was out.. lol

Lesson learned that for this job the mazda puller makes this much easier and less stress about possibly messing up the ecc shaft. Now once I get my new clutch in I'll be ready to get the transmission back on and then drop the oil pan for the next job!

Big thanks to j_tso (Joe) I'll be in touch to get you your puller back along with a 6pk of your favorite beer!!

Was just curious why you borrowed the blind hole puller from autozone rather than the slide hammer/pilot bearing remover combo? I've pulled many 2nd gen pilot bearings with it and one 3rd gen. And it's cheap enough to forget to return it. LOL
